WHINE/HOWL OR GROAN TYPE NOISE WITH
VEHICLE IN MOTION - INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
BEARING

ISSUE
Some 2008-2011 Focus vehicles may exhibit a whine, howl or groan type noise from the intermediate shaft bearing with the vehicle in motion. This may due to moisture getting past the bearing seals.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Determine condition of the intermediate shaft bearing by rotating the intermediate shaft by hand. Does intermediate shaft bearing show any signs of roughness, wear or seal damage?
a. No - this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 205-00 for normal diagnostics.
b. Yes - proceed to Step 2.
2. Replace the intermediate shaft bearing. Refer to WSM, Section 205-04.
a. When separating the center shaft from the outer shaft, do not remove both clamps. Remove and discard only the large inner boot clamp.
