Pinpoint Test AF: SYNC(R) Traffic, Directions And Information Service Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information service is a subscription-based service that includes precise turn-by-turn directions, personalized real-time traffic updates with text alerts, business search, entertainment, news, sports, stocks, travel and weather. The customer's Bluetooth-capable mobile phone is used to access and download the SYNC(R) services. The GPS (Global Positioning System) antenna, that is integral to the GPSM (Global Positioning System Module), is used to detect the location and direction of the vehicle. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM)
- GPSM (Global Positioning System Module)
- Subscription expired
PINPOINT TEST AF : SYNC(R) TRAFFIC, DIRECTIONS AND INFORMATION SERVICE IS INOPERATIVE
AF1 CHECK FOR APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DTCs
- Ignition ON.
- Using a scan tool, perform the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded in the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)?
Yes
REFER to the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DTC chart Information and Entertainment Systems.
No
GO to AF2.
AF2 CHECK FOR GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DTCs
- Ignition ON.
- Using a scan tool, perform the GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded in the GPSM (Global Positioning System Module)?
Yes
REFER to the GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DTC chart Information and Entertainment Systems.
No
GO to AF3.
AF3 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER SUBSCRIPTION AND PHONE NUMBER
- NOTE: Prior to performing this pinpoint test step, inquire with the customer about SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information service registration.
Verify that the customer has an active subscription and the correct phone number is registered on the SYNC(R) website. REFER to the SyncMyRide website.
Is the subscription activated and the correct phone number registered?
Yes
GO to AF4.
No
If the subscription is not activated, INFORM the customer that in order for the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information to function the subscription needs to be activated on the SYNC(R) website. REFER to the SyncMyRide website.
If the phone number is incorrect, INFORM the customer that the correct phone number must be registered on the SYNC(R) website. REFER to the SyncMyRide website.
AF4 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER'S PHONE CONNECTION TO SYNC(R) TRAFFIC, DIRECTIONS AND INFORMATION SERVICES
- Advise the customer to connect their phone to the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services. Caller ID blocking must be disabled on the customer's phone. REFER to the Owner's Literature.
- Operate one of the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services by selecting the SYNC services on the touchscreen.
- Verify that the phone call is placed and that the phone is connected to the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services.
Does the phone place a call to the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services and states connected to services?
Yes
GO to AF5.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test K. Pinpoint Test K: Unable To Pair Bluetooth Device Or The Bluetooth Functionality Is Inoperative
AF5 OBSERVE THE SYNC(R) TRAFFIC, DIRECTIONS AND INFORMATION SERVICES SUBSCRIPTION COMMERCIAL
- Once the customer phone is connected to the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services, observe the subscription commercial.
Does the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services subscription commercial repeat over and over with no selection option?
Yes
There is a potential SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services issue and the problem does not reside in the vehicles audio system. CONTACT the Ford Technical Hotline for assistance.
No
GO to AF6.
AF6 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DIRECTIONS FROM THE SYNC(R) TRAFFIC, DIRECTIONS AND INFORMATION SERVICES
- When prompted, select directions from the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services and observe the audible prompts from the audio system.
Is a single chime heard and an audible prompt indicating the navigation route is being sent to the vehicle followed by a short chime?
Yes
The SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services is operating correctly at this time.
No
If no chime is heard and an audible prompt indicating that the system was unable to locate the vehicle, there is a potential SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services issue and the problem does not reside in the vehicles audio system. CONTACT the Ford Technical Hotline for assistance.
If a single chime heard and an audible prompt indicating the navigation route is being sent to the vehicle followed by a repeating chime, GO to AF7.
AF7 REPROGRAM THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)
- Perform the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) Standard Programming and force a CIP (Consumer Interface Processor) reflash. For vehicles with 8-Inch (203 mm) touchscreen, REFER to Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Programming- Standard, 8-Inch (203 mm) Touchscreen Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Programming - Standard, 8-Inch (203 mm) Touchscreen. For vehicles with 4.2-Inch (107 mm) screen, REFER to Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Programming- 4.2-Inch (107 mm) Screen Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Programming - 4.2-Inch (107 mm) Screen.
- Once the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) programming is complete and the system has re-initialized, confirm that the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services operates correctly.
Does the SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services operate correctly?
Yes
The concern was resolved by reflashing the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module). The SYNC(R) traffic, directions and information services is operating correctly at this time.
No
GO to AF8.
AF8 CHECK FOR CORRECT APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) OPERATION
- Disconnect the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Wait 2 minutes for the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) to re-initialize.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module). REFER to Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
