Wheel Cylinder Lubrication

NOTICE: Use only specified silicone based lubricant. Use of other lubricants may cause damage to piston seals.

1. Remove the brake drum. For additional information, refer to Drum Brake Service and Repair.

2. Remove the upper and lower return springs.

3. With the brake shoe return springs removed, push the leading shoe into the wheel cylinder until the shoe bottoms out.

4. NOTE: Adding lubricant to the wheel cylinder pistons is critical to this repair. It eliminates the noise source by reducing friction between the wheel cylinder piston and the aluminum wheel cylinder wall. Failure to pack the specified grease into the wheel cylinder bore may result in a repeat repair. Greasing the wheel cylinder rubber dust boot will have no affect on this noise.

Pull back the wheel cylinder dust boot (opposite depressed shoe) and apply the specified grease around the wheel cylinder piston. Be sure to pack the grease into the wheel cylinder bore to ensure grease gets back to the piston seal.

- Reposition the wheel cylinder dust boot.

5. Push the trailing shoe into the wheel cylinder until the shoe bottoms out.

7. Once both wheel cylinder pistons have been lubricated, push the pistons side-to-side at least 3 times to distribute the lubricant and verify smooth movement.

8. Install the upper and lower return springs.

9. Install the brake drum.
- Adjust the rear brake shoes. For additional information, refer to Drum Brake Service and Repair.
