Removal

NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. Remove the engine appearance cover.

2. Remove the crankcase vent tube. REFER to Quick Connect Coupling Quick Connect Coupling.

3. Remove the LH (Left Hand) ignition coils. REFER to Ignition Coil-On-Plug - LH Ignition Coil-On-Plug - LH.

4. Remove the oil level indicator.

5. Detach the 3 wiring harness retainers from the LH (Left Hand) valve cover stud bolts and position the harness aside.

6. Disconnect the 2 VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid electrical connectors and detach the 2 oil control solenoid wiring harness pin-type retainers (1 shown).

7. Detach the 2 wiring harness pin-type retainers.

8. Disconnect the LH (Left Hand) HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) electrical connector and detach the wiring harness connector pin-type retainer from the LH (Left Hand) valve cover.

9. Disconnect the 3 fuel injector electrical connectors and detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the LH (Left Hand) valve cover stud bolts.

10. Disconnect the 2 ground cables from the engine front cover and the RH (Right Hand) strut tower.

11. NOTE: Coolant hose removed from graphic for clarity.

Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the harness aside.

12. NOTICE: When removing valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid.

NOTICE: If the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) solenoid seal sticks to the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid, then carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free.

NOTE: The plastic electrical connector on the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid will rotate approximately 12 degrees inside the steel housing, which is normal.

Loosen the 4 bolts and 7 stud bolts.

1. Remove the valve cover.

2. Discard the gasket.

13. Inspect the 2 VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.

1. Using 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) remove and discard the damaged seal(s).

14. Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.

1. Using 303-1247/1 and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) remove and discard the damaged seal(s).

15. Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces using Motorcraft(R) Metal Surface Prep.

Installation

1. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.

Using 303-1247/2 and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) install the new spark plug tube seal(s).

2. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.

Using 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) install the new VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) seal(s).

3. NOTICE: Failure to use Motorcraft(R) High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.

NOTE: If the valve cover is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket Remover and Motorcraft(R) Metal Surface Prep. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply an 8 mm (0.315 in) bead of Motorcraft(R) High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the engine front cover-to- LH (Left Hand) cylinder head joints.

4. Using a new gasket, install the LH (Left Hand) valve cover and tighten the 4 bolts and 7 stud bolts.

- Tighten in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

5. Ensure the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) seals in the valve cover are below the top of the connector (flat portion) on the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control valve otherwise the interface may leak.

6. NOTE: Coolant hose removed from graphic for clarity.

Attach the wiring harness retainer.

7. Connect the ground cables to the RH (Right Hand) strut tower and engine front cover.

- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

8. Connect the 3 fuel injector electrical connectors and attach the 2 wiring harness retainers to the LH (Left Hand) valve cover stud bolts.

9. Connect the LH (Left Hand) HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) electrical connector and attach the wiring harness connector pin-type retainer to the LH (Left Hand) valve cover.

10. Attach the 2 wiring harness pin-type retainers.

11. Connect the 2 VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid electrical connectors and attach the 2 oil control solenoid wiring harness pin-type retainers (1 shown).

12. Attach the 3 wiring harness retainers to the LH (Left Hand) valve cover stud bolts.

13. Install the oil level indicator.

14. Install the LH (Left Hand) ignition coils. REFER to Ignition Coil-On-Plug - LH Ignition Coil-On-Plug - LH.

15. Install the crankcase vent tube. REFER to Quick Connect Coupling Quick Connect Coupling.

16. Install the engine appearance cover.
