Leakage Inspection
Leakage Inspection
Component Test
NOTE: The PTU (Power Transfer Unit) may leak different color fluids, red for automatic transmission fluid and brown/black gear lube for PTU (Power Transfer Unit) fluid. The PTU (Power Transfer Unit) seals prevent these types of fluids from leaking externally. It is important to note which color of fluid is leaking to determine the most appropriate service procedure.
1. Inspect the RH (Right Hand) side of the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) for leaks. If no leaks are found, GO to Step 2.
NOTICE: Remove and replace leaking seals using the information found in the Intermediate Shaft Seal and Deflector or Cover Seal replacement procedure. The specified tools called out in this procedure allow seal replacement without causing damage to the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) casing/drive gear.
1. If the leak is red automatic transmission fluid, replace the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) intermediate shaft seal located inside the bore of the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) shaft, behind the deflector. REFER to Intermediate Shaft Seal and Deflector Intermediate Shaft Seal and Deflector.
2. If the leak is brown/black gear lube, replace the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) larger cover seal located on the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) cover, behind the deflector. REFER to Cover Seal Cover Seal.
2. Inspect the LH (Left Hand) side of the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) for leaks.
1. If the leak is red automatic transmission fluid, replace the compression seal located between the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) and transmission. REFER to Power Transfer Unit (PTU) Removal and Replacement.
2. If the leak is brown/black, the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) is overfilled and venting fluid from the top of the PTU (Power Transfer Unit). Flush and fill the PTU (Power Transfer Unit). REFER to Power Transfer Unit (PTU) Draining and Filling Power Transfer Unit (PTU) Draining and Filling.
