Pinpoint Test BB: The Internet Services (Text Messaging, Web Browser) Are Inoperative

Normal Operation

The in-dash computer transmits and receives data through the modem-antenna. It also uses the modem-antenna to receive the Global Positioning System (GPS) signal. If there is a concern with the navigation system, GO to Pinpoint Test L Pinpoint Test L: The Position Cursor Is Inaccurate.

Before diagnosing the modem-antenna, it is important to note the following:

- An active subscription is necessary for correct operation of the modem-antenna.
- The vehicle must be located within an area covered by the subscriber network in order to have internet functionality.
- Internet operation can be affected by obstructions to the antenna line of sight, such as driving in parking structures, under overpasses, or near tall buildings.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Subscription expired
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Modem-antenna
- In-dash computer

PINPOINT TEST BB: THE INTERNET SERVICES (TEXT MESSAGING, WEB BROWSER) ARE INOPERATIVE

NOTE: Obstructions to the modem-antenna line of sight can affect the internet connection.

BB1 CHECK THE SUBSCRIBER NETWORK COVERAGE

- Check that the vehicle is being diagnosed in a location that is within the subscriber network coverage. Refer to the Ford Work Solutions(TM) consumer Web site for coverage maps.
- Is the vehicle currently located within an area covered by the subscriber network?

Yes
GO to BB2.

No
The vehicle cannot be diagnosed correctly at this location. ADVISE the customer to take the vehicle to a dealership within the subscriber network coverage.

BB2 CHECK THE INTERNET SIGNAL

- Enter the Internet Connection Manager. Refer to Ford Work Solutions(TM) Self-Diagnostic Mode Ford Work Solutions(TM) Self-Diagnostic Mode.
- Observe the signal strength.
- Is the modem-antenna receiving a signal?

Yes
GO to BB3.

No
GO to BB4.

BB3 CHECK THE MODEM-ANTENNA CONNECTION STATUS

- While still in the Internet Connection Manager, press the ACTIVATION WIZARD icon.
- Observe the screen.




- Does the activation wizard screen indicate the device is already activated?

Yes
GO to BB4.

No
The subscription has expired, or the modem-antenna has never been activated. ADVISE the customer to contact the service provider to re-activate the modem-antenna.

BB4 VERIFY THE SUBSCRIBER NETWORK IS OPERATIONAL

- Verify the subscriber network is operational. Refer to the Ford Work Solutions(TM) consumer Web site .
- Is the subscriber network operational?

Yes
GO to BB5.

No
ADVISE the customer that Internet service may be unavailable during periods of subscriber network outage.

BB5 ISOLATE THE MODEM-ANTENNA

- Install a new modem-antenna. Refer to Modem - Antenna Modem - Antenna.
- Test the system for normal operation.
- Does the system operate correctly?

Yes
The cause of the concern was an inoperative modem-antenna. The system is now operating correctly.

No
GO to BB6.

BB6 CHECK FOR CORRECT IN-DASH COMPUTER OPERATION

- Disconnect all the in-dash computer connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the in-dash computer connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new in-dash computer. REFER to In-Dash Computer In-Dash Computer. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
