The selector lever cable transfers the transmission operating mode from the selector lever to the automatic transmission. The indicated position of the selector lever is transferred to the transmission through the steering column mounted selector lever, or the floor-mounted selector lever, to the selector lever cable and down to the manual control lever on the transmission.
Brake Shift Interlock System - Column
The brake shift interlock system prevents the transmission from being shifted from the PARK position until the brake pedal is applied. The brake shift interlock system consists of a Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) mounted at the upper end of the steering column near the selector lever.
Brake Shift Interlock System - Floor
The brake shift interlock system prevents the transmission from being shifted from the PARK position until the brake pedal is applied. The brake shift interlock system consists of a BSIA mounted on the floor selector lever assembly.
Tow/Haul Switch
The Tow/Haul switch is a momentary contact switch located on the end of the column shift selector lever or on the floor shift selector lever knob. To activate the Tow/Haul feature, press the button on the end of the column shift selector lever or floor shift selector lever knob. The Tow/Haul feature delays upshifts to reduce the frequency of transmission shifting. Tow/Haul also provides engine braking in all forward gears when the selector lever is in the (D) position. Depending on driving and load conditions, the transmission may downshift, slow the vehicle and control the vehicle speed when descending a hill. To deactivate the Tow/Haul feature and return to normal driving mode, press the Tow/Haul switch on the end of the selector lever or floor selector lever knob. The words TOW HAUL will no longer be illuminated on the Instrument Cluster (IC). When the engine is turned off and restarted, the transmission automatically returns to normal (D) mode (Tow/Haul OFF). Do not use the Tow/Haul feature when driving in icy conditions.
Select Shift Transmission
The select shift transmission switch is a momentary contact switch that is located on the column shift selector lever or the floor shift selector lever knob. To activate the select shift feature, place the selector lever into the M (manual) position and press the plus ( + ) or minus ( - ) on the column shift selector lever or floor shift selector lever knob. When the selector lever is in the D position the select shift transmission allows the driver to progressively lock out overdrive gears but keeps the transmission shifting automatically through lower gears. When towing in busy traffic or hilly areas, this prevents the transmission from shift hunting when loads cannot be pulled in overdrive gears.
When the selector lever is moved to the M position the driver has control over transmission shifting by manually selecting which gear to operate in.
Enabling the select shift is achieved by pressing the toggle switch located on the selector lever. Once the switch is applied all available gears are displayed above the PRNDL display. The current gear is displayed in orange and all other gears are displayed in ice blue.
When moving the selector lever into the M position all displayed gears on the IC are illuminated except the gear the transmission is in. Pressing plus ( + ) on the toggle switch once shifts the transmission to the next highest gear. Pressing minus ( - ) on the toggle switch once shifts the transmission to the next lowest gear. If downshifting the transmission causes an engine overspeed the desired gear flashes above the PRNDL display then goes out indicating a shift was attempted but not achieved.
When select shift is not enabled only the PRNDL remains illuminated and the row above remains dark.
