Exhaust System - Leaks/Odors/Noise

6.7L DIESEL - EXHAUST LEAK/ODOR/NOISE - EXHAUST PRESSURE SENSOR TUBE CONNECTION

2011 F-Super Duty

ISSUE
Some 2011 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine and built on or before 2/16/2011 may exhibit an exhaust leak or odor from the exhaust pressure (EP) sensor tube-to-exhaust pipe connection.

ACTION
Follow the service procedure to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the EP tube at the exhaust pipe connection for indications of exhaust leak or odor.

a. If indications of exhaust leak or odor are found, proceed to Step 2.

b. If indications of exhaust leak or odor are not found, do not continue with this article and follow normal Workshop Manual (WSM) diagnostics.

2. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01C.

3. Using a 16 mm crows foot, loosen the EP tube nut that attaches to the turbo up pipe and push the nut upwards to expose the ferrule.

4. Does the ferrule spin freely on the EP tube?





a. Yes - Apply Motorcraft(R) High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant or equivalent to the EP tube and ferrule so the ferrule rotates on tube with lubrication. Proceed to Step 11. (Figure 1)

b. No - proceed to Step 5 to replace the EP tube assembly.

5. Loosen the EP tube bracket nut three (3) turns.

6. Electrically disconnect the EP sensor and remove the EP tube assembly.

7. Replace the EP tube assembly.

a. Apply Motorcraft� High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant or equivalent to the EP tube and ferrule so the ferrule rotates on tube with lubrication. (Figure 1)

8. Install the EP tube and finger tighten the tube nut and bracket nut.

9. Tighten the EP tube nut to 15 N.m (134 lb-in). Refer to WSM for Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

10. Tighten the bracket nut on EGR cooler to 10 N.m (88 lb-in). Refer to WSM for Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

11. Tighten the EP tube nut to the final torque of 20 N.m (177 lb-in). Refer to WSM for Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

a. The EP tube can be tighten directly to 20 N.m (177 lb-in) if removal of the bracket was not required. Refer to WSM for torque wrench adapter formulas.

12. Install upper intake manifold. Refer to WSM, Section 303-O1C.
