Pinpoint Test AL: The 4X4 High/Low Message Center Indicator Is Never/Always On

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60, Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

On the Mechanical Shift-On-The-Fly (MSOF) Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system, the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the 4X4 high and 4X4 low input hardwired from the 4X4 high/low indicator switch (mode indication switch). When 4X4 high is selected, the 4X4 high/low indicator switch provides a ground on the 4X4 high input circuit. When 4X4 low is selected, the 4X4 high/low indicator switch provides a ground on both the 4X4 low input circuit and the 4X4 high input circuit. The IPC monitors the 4X4 high and 4X4 low inputs and when the applicable grounding is detected, the IPC turns on the appropriate 4X4 message center indicator.

On the Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF) 4WD system, the IPC receives the 4X4 high and 4X4 low input from the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When 4X4 high or 4X4 low is selected, the 4X4 control module sends the IPC the appropriate 4X4 indicator request.

On the ESOF 4WD system, if the 4X4 indicator request is missing for less than 5 seconds, the 4X4 high and 4X4 low indication remains in the last indication state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the 4X4 indicator request is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0102:00 continuous memory and defaults the 4X4 high and 4X4 low indicators inactive (off).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Message center concern
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- 4WD mode indication switch
- TCCM

PINPOINT TEST AL: THE 4X4 HIGH/LOW MESSAGE CENTER INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
AL1 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR

- Close all doors then open the LH front door.
- Ignition ON.

- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the displays to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.

- Observe the message center.
- Is the door ajar message center telltale warning indicator active?

Yes
GO to AL2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test AN. Pinpoint Tests AN: The Door Ajar Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

-------------------------------------------------
AL2 CHECK THE 4WD SYSTEM OPERATION

- Operate the 4WD system.
- Does the 4WD system operate correctly?

Yes
For the MSOF 4WD system 4X4 high or 4X4 low indicator is never on, GO to AL3. For the MSOF 4WD system 4X4 high or 4X4 low indicator is always on, GO to AL5. For the ESOF 4WD system, GO to AL7.

No
REFER to Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Systems .

-------------------------------------------------
AL3 CHECK THE 4WD MODE INDICATION SWITCH OPERATION

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: 4WD Mode Indication Switch C3146.
- For both the 4X4 low and 4X4 high indicators, connect a fused jumper wire between the 4WD mode indication switch C3146-2 (4X4 low), circuit CCF06 (BU/GN or GN/BU), harness side and ground; and between the 4WD mode indication switch C3146-1, circuit CCF22 (BU/OG or WH/BU), harness side and ground (4X4 high).

- For the 4X4 high indicator, connect a fused jumper wire between the 4WD mode indication switch C3146-1, circuit CCF22 (BU/OG or WH/BU), harness side and ground.

- Ignition ON.
- Does the 4X4 indicator illuminate?

Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new 4WD mode indication switch. REFER to Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Systems . TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to AL4

-------------------------------------------------
AL4 CHECK THE 4X4 LOW OR 4X4 HIGH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC C220.
- For both the 4X4 low and 4X4 high indicators, measure the resistance between the IPC C220-16, circuit CCF06 (BU/GN), harness side and the 4WD mode indication switch C3146-2, circuit CCF06 (BU/GN or GN/BU), harness side.

- For the 4X4 high indicator, measure the resistance between the IPC C220-17, circuit CCF22 (BU/OG), harness side and the 4WD mode indication switch C3146-1, circuit CCF22 (BU/OG or WH/BU), harness side.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AL10.

No
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
AL5 CHECK THE 4WD MODE INDICATION SWITCH FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Place the 4WD system in the 2WD mode.
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC C220 .
- Measure the resistance between the IPC C220-16, circuit CCF06 (BU/GN), harness side and ground (4X4 low) and between the IPC C220-17, circuit CCF22 (BU/OG), harness side and ground (4X4 high).

- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
