Removal
Transmission
WARNING: Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables Battery Disconnect / Connect.
3. Remove the upper gear shift lever boot.
1. Pull up the rear of the upper gear shift lever boot.
2. Slide the upper gear shift lever boot back, to unseat it from the front tabs.
4. Slide the upper gear shift lever boot up the upper gear shift lever to access the 2 bolts.
- Remove the 2 bolts and remove the upper gear shift lever.
5. Remove the 4 screws and the lower gear shift lever boot.
6. Remove the 4 bolts and the lower gear shift lever.
7. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Starting System - Gasoline Engines Service and Repair.
8. Remove 2 engine-to-transmission spacer plate bolts.
9. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe with dual catalytic converters. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System .
10. If the transmission is being disassembled, remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
11. Remove the clutch slave cylinder and position aside.
- Slide the heat shield back and rotate counterclockwise 45 degrees while pushing inward.
12. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
13. Disconnect the fuel tubes from the fuel tube clip on the transmission case and position aside.
14. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers from the transmission and position the harness aside.
- Disconnect the 2 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) clips.
- Disconnect the 2 Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) clips.
- Disconnect the wiring harness clips.
15. Using the High Lift Transmission Jack, support the transmission.
- Securely strap the High Lift Transmission Jack to the transmission.
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles
16. Remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to Transfer Case .
Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)
17. NOTE: If a pry area is not available on the driveshaft side, it may be necessary to tap the driveshaft yoke with a plastic or rubber soft-faced hammer.
NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft flange.
Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft-to-transmission flange bolts. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission.
- Using mechanic's wire, support the driveshaft.
18. Remove the transmission support crossmember. For additional information, refer to Full Frame and Body Mounting Service and Repair.
All vehicles
19. Remove the 7 transmission-to-engine bolts.
20. Remove the transmission by moving the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch, then lower from the vehicle.
