Information And Message Center

Information And Message Center

There are 2 types of message center configurations available. The base message center is a fixed format, 2-line display integrated into the center of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The optional message center is a 4.2 inch display that is also located in the center of the IPC. The base message center is controlled by a 3-button message center switch located in the LH steering wheel switch assembly. The optional message center is controlled by a 5-button message center switch, also located in the LH steering wheel switch assembly.

Oil Change Minder

NOTE: On early build vehicles, the PCM uses time and distance calculations stored in Keep Alive Memory (KAM) in the PCM to help determine the oil change minder status. If the PCM KAM is reset or lost for any reason (battery disconnect, PCM disconnect or dead battery), the oil change minder is disabled and the oil life reset procedure needs to be carried out through the message center to re-enable the oil minder function.

The message center provides an oil change minder to inform the driver that an oil change is required. The duration of the interval between oil changes is calculated in the PCM, and varies due to driving conditions. The PCM assumes a base mileage of 16,093 km (10,000 miles) or 1 year for normal driving. However, this number will be adjusted down due to high engine temperature, high engine rpms, use of flex fuel and possibly low oil level. The PCM calculates and provides an oil life status message to the IPC. The IPC further converts the remaining oil life using the driver's configured oil life start value and displays the oil life percentage, indicating the remaining oil life. The oil change minder can be reset at any time by the driver. Refer to Message Center Configuration Service and Repair.

Oil Life and Oil Life Start Value

The oil life is displayed in percentages. The oil life start value is used to increase or decrease the starting point of the oil life. The oil life start value can be changed back to the maximum of approximately 16,093 km (10,000 miles) if the value was previously changed or to lower the value by 10% increments down to 10%. Each 10% reduction lowers the oil life in both mileage and time (days).

Compass Display (If equipped)

The message center provides a compass display in the message center display using directional information sent from the compass module, which is integrated into the interior auto-dimming mirror, on vehicles without navigation. On vehicles with navigation, the compass is displayed in the navigation display or ACM touchscreen.

Message Center Indicators

The message center displays message center indicators in the RH side of the message center display area (base IPC) or in the lower RH section of the message center (optional IPC). Message center indicators replace indicators that have typically been displayed in the IPC using the same iconic representation (for example; the low oil pressure message center warning indicator is represented by the oil can symbol that has been traditionally used as the low oil pressure warning indicator in other IPC configurations). Message center indicators are generally displayed along with warning messages in the message center display area of the IPC.

Base Message Center

The base IPC message center functions and menus listed below can be selected through the select/reset button by pressing and releasing the select/reset button to scroll through the menu items. The INFO items (trip A, trip B and average fuel economy) can be reset by holding the select/reset button for approximately 2 seconds. The SETUP items, (language, system configurable items such as autolamps or autolock) can be reset by holding the select/reset button for approximately 2 seconds when the selected menu item is displayed. Refer to the Owner's Literature for complete operating instructions for both the full function message center and the base IPC message center.

Message Center Configuration

On configurable items such as autolock, auto-unlock or parking aid, the message center indicates the appropriate selection (ON/OFF) by bracketing the selection. For example, if the driver selects the autolock feature on, the message would display as follows: AUTOLOCK [ON] OFF. If the driver selects the autolock off, the message would display as follows: AUTOLOCK ON [OFF].

Message Center Functions

The message center provides the following functions:

- Information displays
- Setup displays
- System check messages
- System warning messages

Information Displays

The information displays are non-timed modes. The selected mode remains on until the driver presses a message center button to change the mode or it is overridden by another mode.

The information display modes (INFO button) are:

- Odometer
- Trip odometer A and B
- MyKey(TM) miles
- Distance To Empty (DTE)
- Average fuel economy
- Trailer brake gain and output (displays only when the gain is changed)
- Drive time (elapsed travel timer)
- Blank display

Setup Displays

The setup displays are timed modes and terminate after a finite interval. As part of the setup menu, the message center has the capability to configure items such as units (English or metric), autolamp delay or to enable/disable options such as autolock. The message center setup display modes (SETUP button) are:

- System check
- Oil life
- Units English/metric
- Autolamp (delay in seconds)
- Autolock (on/off) (except manual transmission)

- MyKey(TM) setup
- Clear MyKey(TM)
- Remote start
- Compass zone (without navigation)
- Compass calibration (without navigation)

System Check Displays

The system check provides a check of all the monitored systems on the vehicle. The system check scrolls through each of the monitored systems and provides a visual indication to report out the status of each system. If the system check does not detect a fault in the system, the message center displays OK for approximately 2 seconds. If a fault is reported in the system, the message center displays a warning message for approximately 2 seconds. To manually scroll through the system check displays, press the RESET button repeatedly.

The system check display modes are:

- Oil life
- Exhaust fluid level (diesel only)
- Engine hours
- Engine idle hours
- Door ajar status
- Brake system status
- Trailer brake control
- Fuel level/DTE
- MyKey(TM) programmed keys

System Warning Messages

The system warning messages alert the driver to possible problems or malfunctions in the vehicle operating systems. The message center displays the last selected feature if there are no additional warning messages. Once a warning message has been displayed, the message must be acknowledged to allow full functionality of the message center. Press the RESET button (base message center) or the OK button (optional message center) to acknowledge and clear the warning message.

The warning messages are divided into 3 basic categories:

- Cannot be cleared until the condition is corrected.
- Reappears 10 minutes after pressing the select/reset button.
- Reappears if the condition clears then reoccurs within the same ignition ON-OFF cycle.

NOTE: All messages listed below are base IPC (3-button message center switch) displays. The optional IPC (5-button message center switch) messages displays are similar.

When the IPC receives a request to display an informational warning message or a fault condition warning message, the message center may display one of the following warning messages:
