OIL LEAK AT CYLINDER HEAD - BEHIND EXHAUST

ISSUE
Some 2011 Fiesta vehicles may exhibit an oil leak at the cylinder head oil galley located behind the exhaust cam phaser.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Add the appropriate amount of gasoline engine dye and run engine for 15 minutes using the ultraviolet (UV) light method. Refer to WSM Section 303-00.
2. Remove upper timing belt cover. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01.
3. Perform an engine oil leak test using the ultraviolet (UV) light method. Refer to WSM Section 303-00.
a. If the oil leak is from behind exhaust camshaft phaser, proceed to Step 3. (Figure 1)
b. If the oil leak is not coming from behind the exhaust camshaft phaser discontinue with this article. Perform normal diagnostics, refer to WSM, Section 303-00.
4. Remove exhaust camshaft phaser and sprocket. Refer to WSM, Section 303-01.
5. Lightly tap out the stem/shank of the Avdel(R) plug using a small pin punch or center punch. Be sure not to drive the stem/shank too deep into the cylinder head oil galley. (Figure 2)
6. Insert a small self tapping screw into the Avdel plug sleeve. (Figure 3)
7. Using long reach side cutters, carefully remove or tap out the Avdel� plug sleeve from the cylinder head oil galley. (Figure 4)
8. Remove the air intake system refer to WSM, Section 303-01. Remove the rear oil galley plug. (Figure 5)
9. Use a magnet to retrieve the Avdel� plug stem/shank from the oil galley.
a. You may also use shop air to blow out the Avdel� plug stem/shank.
10. Using a 1/8" 27 NPT tap, tap the cylinder head oil galley. Drive the tap approximately 12.7 mm (1/2") into the oil galley.
11. Using shop air and Motorcraft(R) Metal Brake Parts Cleaner, clean out oil galley from the rear of the engine.
12. Visually inspect the front oil galley for any remaining debris to ensure cleanliness.
13. Insert pipe plug into the front oil galley.
14. Tighten pipe plug until flush with cylinder head.
15. Install the camshaft phaser and sprocket. Refer to WSM, Section 303-01.
16. Install rear oil galley plug and torque to 24 N.m (18 lb-ft).
17. Install the air intake system. Refer WSM, Section 303-01.
