Engine Controls - Starting/A/T Engagement Issue/MIL/DTCs
TSB 11-5-2405/31/11
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - ENGINE START,
TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT, AND/OR MIL ON
WITH DTCS - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 9/11/2010
FORD:
2011 Fiesta
ISSUE
Some 2011 Fiesta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and built on or before 9/11/2010 may exhibit transmission engagement concerns in Drive or Reverse when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, no engagement, delayed engagement, intermittent engagement, noise during engagement, and/or a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with powertrain diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). One or more of the following DTCs may typically be set: P0116, P06B8, P0805, P0809, P087A, P087E, P0884, P2831, P283A, P2832, P2835, P2836 and/or P2837. Some vehicles may exhibit DTC P0700 without any accompanying fault codes. Some vehicles may exhibit an engine no crank or intermittent start with DTC P0850. Some vehicles may exhibit concerns with or without DTCs.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Using a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM), measure battery voltage at the battery posts. Battery voltage must be 12.5-14.0 volts.
a. If voltage is below 12.5 volts, charge the battery and retest before proceeding to Step 2. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 414-01.
b. If voltage is 12.5-14.0 volts, proceed to Step 2.
2. Using a DVOM, key on engine off (KOEO), measure voltage from battery positive terminal to G106 PCM ground bolt. Compare reading to battery voltage measurement in Step 1.
a. If voltage difference is 0.5 volt or less - proceed to Step 3.
b. If voltage difference is more than 0.5 volts - Repair circuit before proceeding to Step 3.
3. Using IDS, verify VPWR and B positive are within 12.5-14.0 volts.
a. If readings are below 12.5 volts - Perform normal diagnostics for low system voltage before proceeding to step 4. Refer to WSM, Section 414-00.
b. If readings are within 12.5-14.0 volts - Proceed to Step 4.
NOTE
REPROGRAMMING POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) / TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) WITH LOW VEHICLE BATTERY VOLTAGE AND/OR LOW IDS BATTERY VOLTAGE MAY RESULT IN A BLANKED PCM AND/OR TCM.
4. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration level using IDS release 72.01 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2011.3 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
NOTE
THE PCM AND TCM ARE A MATCHED SET. REPROGRAMMING THE PCM WILL AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE THE TCM.
NOTE
SOME VEHICLES MAY ALREADY BE AT THE LATEST LEVEL CALIBRATION.
5. Using IDS, select Powertrain, Transmission, Clutch system test, complete procedure.
6. Using IDS select Powertrain, Transmission, Transmission Adaptive Learning and perform each of the following:
a. Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Adaptive Learning
b. Shift Drum Adaptive Learning
C. Clutch Adaptive Learning
d. Exit
7. Perform Adaptive Drive Cycle. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.
NOTE
FAILURE TO PERFORM ALL STEPS OF THE ADAPTIVE LEARN ROUTINES AND THE DRIVE CYCLE MAY RESULT IN ERRATIC SHIFTS AND DRIVEABILITY CONCERNS. REFER TO WSM, SECTION 307-11 FOR MORE INFORMATION.
