Fuel Tank and Lines

Fuel Tank and Lines

Fuel System

The fuel tank and lines consists of the:

- saddle-type fuel tank.
- Fuel Pump (FP) module.
- lifetime in tank fuel filter on 3.7L and 5.0L (4V) vehicles (serviced as part of the FP module).
- fuel level sensor.
- Easy FuelTM (capless) fuel tank filler pipe assembly.
- inline fuel filter on 5.4L (4V) vehicles only.
- Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor (part of the fuel vapor tube assembly).
- fuel tubes (liquid and vapor).
- Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM)

The vehicle:

- utilizes an Electronic Returnless Fuel System (ERFS) on 5.4L (4V) vehicles and an Mechanical Returnless Fuel System (MRFS) on 3.7L and 5.0L (4V) vehicles.
- has a dual-container (saddle-type) fuel tank, each half equipped with a fuel level sender.
- has a FP module in the LH saddle of the fuel tank that supplies fuel under pressure to the fuel rail.
- has a serviceable fuel level sender mounted on the FP module.
- has a fuel level sensor in the RH saddle of the fuel tank.
- has a fuel tank filler pipe which contains a restrictor plate to permit only unleaded fuel to be pumped into the fuel tank.
- has an Easy FuelTM (capless) fuel tank filler pipe assembly, which cannot be modified in any way.
- has a supplemental refueling adapter located in the luggage compartment.
- has a fuel filter that is mounted in front of the fuel tank on the LH side of the vehicle providing filtration to protect the fuel injectors on 5.4L (4V) vehicles only.
- has a fuel filter lifetime in tank fuel filter on 3.7L and 5.0L (4V) vehicles (serviced as part of the FP module).
- has fuel tubes (liquid and vapor) combined in a bundle along with the brake tubes mounted on the underside of the floorpan and covered with a protective cover shield.
- has a FTP sensor (part of the fuel vapor tube assembly).
- has quick connect and spring lock fuel tube couplings.
- has an Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) that shuts off fuel in the event of a collision.

Fuel Pump (FP) Shut-off Feature

In the event of a moderate to severe collision, the vehicle is equipped with a Fuel Pump (FP) shut-off feature that is initiated by the event notification signal.

The event notification signal is a signal provided by the Restraints Control Module (RCM) to the Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM). The FPCM will then shut-off power to the FP module. The RCM will also send a fuel shut-off signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM will then send a signal to the FPCM to shut-off the FP module.

Should the vehicle shut off after a collision due to this feature, the vehicle may be restarted by first turning the ignition switch to the OFF position and then turn the ignition switch to the ON position. In some instances the vehicle may not start the first time and may take one additional key cycle.
