Instrument Cluster (IC)

Instrument Cluster (IC)

The Instrument Cluster (IC) contains gauges, indicator lamps, and warning lamps that are designed to provide the driver with system status updates and to alert the driver that certain conditions exist in the vehicle.

Gauges

Gauges provide information to the driver indicating the status of systems. The systems that use gauges are as follows:

- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine rpm
- Fuel level
- Vehicle speed

Informational Indicators

Informational indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that exist in the vehicle. The informational indicators are grouped into the following system/subsystems:

- Engine/powertrain control
- MIL
- Overdrive (O/D)

- Lighting
- High beam
- Turn signal

- Vehicle control
- Anti-theft
- Cruise control
- Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) control
- Traction control
- Traction control disabled

Warning Indicators

Warning indicator lamps provide information to the driver of conditions that could potentially alter vehicle performance. The warning indicators are grouped into the following systems/subsystems:

- Engine/powertrain control
- Charging system
- Check fuel cap
- Engine over-temperature
- Low engine oil pressure

- Occupant/driver safety
- Door ajar
- Low tire pressure monitoring system ( TPMS)
- Low fuel
- Safety belt
- Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) (air bag)

- Vehicle control
- ABS
- Brake system

Hardwired Inputs

The hardwired inputs are provided from the following systems or components:

- Brake fluid level
- Charging system
- Driver door ajar switch
- Engine oil pressure switch
- Fuel level
- Key-in-ignition switch
- Multifunction switch (high beam/turn signals)
- Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver
- Parking brake status

Network Message Inputs

Module messaging is becoming the standard for sending and receiving information required to operate the IC. For a complete list of module messages with the message origination sources, refer to Module Communications Network Testing and Inspection.

The status and information message that the IC requires from other vehicle inputs are grouped into the following systems/subsystems:

- Powertrain
- ABS
- Check fuel cap
- Engine rpm
- Engine temperature
- 4WD
- MIL
- O/D off
- Speed control
- Vehicle speed

- Occupant/driver safety
- Door ajar
- Safety belt
- SRS
- TPMS
