Transmission - Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)
WARNING: Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables Battery Disconnect.
2. Remove the upper gearshift lever, the outer gearshift lever boot and the console as an assembly. For additional information, refer to Gearshift Lever and Boot Service and Repair.
3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.
4. If transmission disassembly is required, remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
- Install the drain plug after draining all the fluid.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
5. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions.
Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Driveshaft Removal and Replacement.
6. Disconnect the wire harness from the crossmember.
7. Position a suitable jack under the transmission. Secure the transmission to the jack with a safety strap.
8. Remove the 6 crossmember bolts.
9. Remove the 2 transmission mount nuts and the crossmember.
10. Remove the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) bracket nut and the bracket from the extension housing.
11. Remove the 2 transmission mount bolts and the transmission mount.
12. Vehicles equipped with the 4.0L engine, remove the catalytic converter Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Exhaust Y-Pipe.
13. Remove the fuel line/wiring harness bracket nut and remove the bracket from the transmission stud.
14. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector and the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
15. Detach the wiring harness from the transmission.
16. NOTICE: Do not allow the starter to hang freely or damage to the wiring may occur.
Remove the 3 bolts from the starter motor. Using mechanic's wire, position the starter aside.
17. Using the Hydraulic Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the clutch hydraulic tube.
18. Using a suitable jack, support the engine.
19. NOTE: Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
20. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
