Disassembly

All vehicles

1. Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column Steering Column.

2. Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair.

3. Remove the ignition switch.

1. Remove the 2 ignition switch screws.

2. Remove the ignition switch.





4. NOTE: Note the position of the ignition lock cylinder gear, bearing and bearing retainer prior to removal.

Remove the ignition lock cylinder bearing retainer.





5. Rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise and remove the ignition lock cylinder bearing.





6. Note the position of the keyhole and remove the ignition lock cylinder gear.





7. Remove the sensor ring.

1. Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.

2. Remove the sensor ring.





8. Remove the steering column lower bearing tolerance ring.





9. NOTE: Tilt column shown, fixed column similar.

Remove the 2 ignition lock cylinder housing screws.





10. WARNING: Use care when removing the spring. The spring is under high tension and may release with great force. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Remove the ignition lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing.

1. Using a shop fabricated tool, pry up on the steering column locking levers.

2. For tilt columns, remove the steering column position spring.





11. Remove the turn signal cancel cam.





12. Remove the steering column upper bearing snap ring.





13. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.





14. Remove the steering column upper bearing sleeve.





15. Remove the steering column upper bearing tolerance ring.

1. Slide the steering column shaft in toward the lock cylinder housing.

2. Slide the steering column upper bearing tolerance ring off the steering column shaft and remove the shaft.





16. Using a suitable punch, remove the steering column upper bearing (small) from the ignition lock cylinder housing.





Vehicles with tilt column

17. Using a suitable punch, remove the steering column lower bearing (large) from the ignition lock cylinder housing.





All vehicles

18. Remove the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.





19. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.

1. Remove the 3 bolts.

2. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.





20. Remove the upper and lower steering column lock lever actuators.





Assembly

All vehicles

1. NOTE: Lubricate the steering column lock lever actuators with premium long-life grease.

Install the upper and lower steering column lock lever actuators.

1. Install the upper steering column lock lever actuator.

2. Install the lower steering column lock lever actuator.





2. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.

1. Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.

2. Install the bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).





3. NOTE: The upward position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.

NOTE: Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.

Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.









4. NOTE: Install the bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.

NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

Install the steering column upper bearing (small) into the ignition lock cylinder housing.













Vehicles with tilt column

5. NOTE: Install the bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.

NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

Install the steering column lower bearing (large) into the ignition lock cylinder housing.













All vehicles

6. Position the steering column shaft in the ignition lock cylinder housing.
- Install the steering column upper bearing tolerance ring onto the steering column shaft.





7. Install the steering column upper bearing sleeve.





8. Install the steering column upper bearing spring.





9. Install the steering column upper bearing snap ring.





10. NOTE: The turn signal cancel cam has a flat surface and a surface that has 4 lobes. Make sure to install the cam with the flat surface upwards. Push the cam onto the shaft until it makes contact with the snap ring.

Install the turn signal cancel cam.





11. Install the 2 ignition lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.
- Lubricate the ignition lock cylinder housing and screws with the specified lubricant.





12. NOTE: Lubricate the ignition lock cylinder housing bushings with the specified lubricant.

NOTE: Tilt column shown, fixed column similar.

Position the ignition lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft on the steering actuator housing.

- Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock lever actuators are aligned.





13. Position the LH and RH steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.

1. Using a shop fabricated tool, position the locking levers.

2. For tilt columns, install and compress the steering column position spring.





14. Position the ignition lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing.
- Tighten the 2 ignition lock cylinder housing screws to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).





15. Install the steering column lower bearing tolerance ring.





16. Install the sensor ring.

1. Install the sensor ring.

2. Install the steering column lower bearing spring.





17. Install the ignition switch.

1. Position the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column.

2. Install the 2 ignition switch screws and tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).





18. NOTE: The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear should be in the 1 o'clock position.

Install the ignition lock cylinder gear.

- Coat the gear using the specified lubricant.





19. Install the ignition lock cylinder bearing.
- The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the 1 o'clock position, with the tab inboard at the 3 o'clock position, and rotate it counterclockwise.

- Lubricate the ignition lock cylinder bearing with the specified lubricant.





20. Install the ignition lock cylinder bearing retainer firmly to engage the 4 retention tabs into the lock housing.





21. Install the clockspring. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair.

22. Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column Steering Column.
