Exhaust System

Exhaust System

NOTE: The exhaust system has 2 catalytic converters. A catalytic converter mounted to the exhaust manifold and an underbody catalytic converter that is serviced with the muffler and tailpipe. To service the underbody catalytic converter, refer to the Muffler and Tailpipe Muffler and Tailpipe procedure.

The exhaust system consists of:

- a one-piece catalytic converter with exhaust flexible pipe (OEM).
- a Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) between the catalytic converter and the underbody catalytic converter.
- an underbody catalytic converter and muffler assembly that is a 1-piece design (OEM).
- a resonator tailpipe assembly.
- muffler brackets with isolators connected to the body.

The exhaust system provides an exit for exhaust gases and reduces engine noise by passing exhaust gases through the catalytic converter, a muffler assembly and resonator. Rubber exhaust hanger insulators attach the exhaust system to the mounting hooks.

Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter plays a major role in the emission control system. The catalytic converter works as a gas reactor. The catalytic converter's function is to speed up the heat-producing chemical reaction between components of the exhaust gases in order to reduce the air pollutants. Because of the high temperatures at which the catalytic converter operates, the vehicle body areas around the catalytic converter are protected by heat shields. The catalytic converter controls 3 emissions: hydro carbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
