Pinpoint Test M: The Turn Signal Lamps Are Always On
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 90, Turn Signal/Stop/Hazard Lamps for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) sends voltage signals to the multifunction switch to monitor the LH turn input and the RH turn input. When the multifunction switch is placed in the LH or RH TURN position, the voltage signal for that input circuit is routed to ground. When the GEM detects the multifunction switch in the LH or RH TURN position, the GEM sends voltage to the appropriate turn lamps.
- DTC B2281 (Right Turn Switch Short to Ground) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the GEM detects a short to ground from the RH turn signal switch input circuit.
- DTC B2282 (Left Turn Switch Short to Ground) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the GEM detects a short to ground from the LH turn signal switch.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Multifunction switch
- GEM
PINPOINT TEST M: THE TURN SIGNAL LAMPS ARE ALWAYS ON
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
M1 DETERMINE IF THE TURN SIGNAL LAMPS ARE FLASHING ON AND OFF
- Ignition ON.
- Observe the turn signal lamps
- Are the turn signal lamps flashing on and off?
Yes
GO to M2.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test N. Pinpoint Test N: One Turn Signal/Hazard Lamp Is Inoperative/Always On
-------------------------------------------------
M2 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202.
- Ignition ON.
- Do the turn lamps continue to flash on and off?
Yes
GO to M3.
No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column Switches Steering Column Multifunction Switch. TEST the system for normal operation
-------------------------------------------------
M3 CHECK THE TURN SIGNAL INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IC C201b.
- For the LH turn signal, measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C202-6, circuit 49S-LG1 (BU), harness side and ground.
- For the RH turn signal, measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C202-7, circuit 49S-LG18 (BU), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to M4.
No
REPAIR circuit 49S-LG1 (BU) (LH turn signal) or circuit 49S-LG18 (BU) (RH turn signal) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
M4 CHECK FOR CORRECT GEM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the GEM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the GEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new GEM. REFER to Multifunction Electronic Modules Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
