Pinpoint Test A: The Air Bag Warning Indicator is Illuminated Continuously

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 46, Supplemental Restraint System for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

During normal operation, the Instrument Cluster (IC) module will illuminate the air bag indicator continuously for 6 seconds. If the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is fault free, the air bag warning indicator will turn off and remain off. If a fault is detected in the SRS, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate and remain illuminated for the rest of the ignition cycle until the fault is no longer detected. The Restraints Control Module (RCM) communicates to the IC module via the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The IC module will illuminate the air bag warning indicator based on messaging from the RCM or if there is no communication between the RCM and IC module.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- IC module
- RCM

PINPOINT TEST A: THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS ILLUMINATED CONTINUOUSLY

WARNING: Always tighten the fasteners of the restraints control module (RCM) and impact sensor (if equipped) to the specified torque. Failure to do so may result in incorrect restraint system operation, which increases the risk of personal injury or death in a crash.

WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when taking measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test.
Inspection and Verification

NOTE: SRS components should only be disconnected or reconnected when instructed to do so within a pinpoint test step. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect diagnosis of the SRS.

NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

A1 RETRIEVE RCM DTCs

NOTE: The RCM does not support the on-demand DTC function. All RCM diagnosis will be carried out using Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs) and associated status information. Refer to DTC Fault Reporting and Status Information. DTC Fault Reporting and Status Information

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - RCM.
- Select the DTC and view DTC Status information.
- Does the status information for any DTC indicate a fault was present at the time of request?

Yes
GO to the DTC Charts for diagnostic direction. Diagnostic Trouble Code Tests and Associated Procedures

Do not clear any DTCs until all DTC concerns have been resolved.

No
REFER to Instrumentation and Warning Chimes Testing and Inspection to diagnose the IC module concern.

If the RCM does not communicate with the scan tool, REFER to Module Communications Network Testing and Inspection to diagnose no power to the scan tool.

Do not clear any DTCs until all DTC concerns have been resolved.
