Transaxle Removal




Transaxle





Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.

2. Remove the battery and battery tray. For additional information, refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables Battery Tray.

3. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and outlet pipe assembly. For additional information, refer to Intake Air Distribution and Filtering Intake Air System Components - Exploded View.

4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

1. Transmission Range (TR) sensor electrical connector.

2. Transaxle solenoid electrical connector.





5. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.





6. Remove the transaxle filler tube bolt.





7. Disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever.





8. Squeeze the tabs together and remove the selector lever cable from the bracket.





9. Remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable clip and position the selector lever cable aside.





10. Disconnect the wire harness retaining clip from the selector lever cable bracket.





11. Disconnect the throttle control electrical connector.





12. Disconnect the bottom PCM electrical connector.





13. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.





14. Remove the power steering hose retainers and the wiring harness retainer from the transaxle filler tube.





15. Remove the transaxle filler tube bolt, rotate the transaxle filler tube from under the Throttle Body (TB) and remove the transaxle filler tube.





16. Remove the front wheels. For additional information, refer to Wheels and Tires Removal and Replacement.

17. Remove the LH, RH halfshafts and the RH intermediate shaft. For additional information, refer to Front Drive Halfshafts Service and Repair.

18. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Starting System Service and Repair.

19. Remove the starter isolator.





20. NOTICE: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage will occur.

NOTE: Mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

Rotate the crankshaft to gain access to the torque converter nuts. Remove and discard the 4 nuts.





21. Remove the roll restrictor bolts, rotate the bottom of the engine away from the subframe and remove the roll restrictor.





22. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





23. Remove the nut from the electrical connector bracket.





24. Remove the nut and position the electrical connector bracket aside.





25. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.





26. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.





27. Install the Engine Support Bar, Engine Lifting Bracket and Adapters and support the engine.





28. Remove the nuts and remove the transaxle support insulator.





29. Using the Engine Support Bar, Engine Lifting Bracket and Adapters, lower the transaxle assembly so that the transaxle support insulator bracket clears the unibody.





30. Secure the transaxle with a high-lift jack using a safety strap.

31. NOTE: Note the location of the different length bolts for installation.

Remove the 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts.





32. Remove the 5 transaxle-to-engine bolts and the transaxle-to-engine studbolt.





33. Separate the transaxle from the engine and lower the transaxle.

34. Install the Torque Converter Retainer to prevent damage to the torque converter.





35. If replacement of the transaxle is required, remove the transaxle opening cover.





36. Remove the transaxle support insulator bracket nuts and remove the bracket.





37. Remove the 2 bolts and the selector lever cable bracket.
