Pinpoint Test E : PCA (Pressure Control Solenoid A) Solenoid

Pinpoint Tests - OSC Equipped Vehicle

Pinpoint Tests

NOTE: Refer to all TSBs and On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) messages that pertain to the transmission concern and follow the procedure as described.

PINPOINT TEST E : PCA (Pressure Control Solenoid A) SOLENOID

NOTE: This test should only be used if DTC P0748, P0960, P0962 or P0963 are present.

NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Vehicle Harness Connector illustration within the Transmission Connector Layouts Transmission Connector Layouts procedure.

NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Internal Harness Connector illustration within the Transmission Connector Layouts Transmission Connector Layouts procedure.

NOTE: PCM connector C175T is used for 5.4L engine vehicles and connector C1551T is used for 6.8L engine vehicles.

E1 CHECK TRANSMISSION VEHICLE HARNESS FOR CONTINUITY

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: PCM C175T (5.4L).

- Disconnect: Transmission Vehicle Harness C1385.

- Check the transmission vehicle harness C1385 is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in the connector and are in good condition before proceeding.

- For 5.4L engines, measure the resistance between PCM C175T and C1385 using the following chart.

Transmission Connector Circuit PCM C1385-10 CET51 (WH) C175T-42 C1385-7 CET25 (BU/GN) C175T-50

- For 6.8L engines, measure the resistance between PCM C1551T and C1385 using the following chart.

Transmission Connector Circuit PCM C1385-10 CET50 (WH/OG) C1551T-23 C1385-7 CET25 (BU/GN) C1551T-49

Is each resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to E2.

No
REPAIR the open circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

E2 CHECK TRANSMISSION VEHICLE HARNESS FOR SHORT TO GROUND

- Measure the resistance between transmission vehicle, harness C1385 and ground using the following chart.

Transmission Connector Circuit Ground C1385-10 CET50 (WH/OG) Ground C1385-7 CET25 (BU/GN) Ground

Is each resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes
GO to E3.

No
REPAIR short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

E3 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION INTERNAL HARNESS FOR AN OPEN

- Drain the transmission fluid.

- Remove the transmission fluid pan.

- Disconnect: Pressure Control Solenoid A (PCA).

- Measure the resistance between transmission internal harness C1385 and the PCA (Pressure Control Solenoid A) solenoid using the following chart.

Transmission Connector Circuit Terminal C1385-10 Signal 2 C1385-7 Power 1

Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to E4.

No
INSTALL a new transmission harness. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

E4 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION INTERNAL HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Measure the resistance between transmission internal harness C1385, harness side and ground using the following chart.

Transmission Connector Circuit Ground C1385-10 Signal Ground C1385-7 Power Ground

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes
GO to E5.

No
INSTALL a new transmission harness. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

E5 CHECK THE PCA (Pressure Control Solenoid A) RESISTANCE

- Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 at the PCA (Pressure Control Solenoid A).

Is the resistance between 4.8-5.4 ohms?

Yes
INSTALL a new PCM.

No
INSTALL a new PCA (Pressure Control Solenoid A). CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
