Pinpoint Test AE: The PRNDL Indicator is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the transmission range status from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (part of the PCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) also uses a brake shift interlock to signal the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) that the shift lever is fully seated in the PARK position. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) compares the brake shift interlock input with the transmission range status sent from the PCM. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) provides a reference voltage to the brake shift interlock. When the gearshift is in PARK (P), the brake shift interlock routes the reference voltage to ground, pulling the circuit low to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). When the gearshift is moved out of PARK (P), the brake shift interlock opens the ground sending the reference voltage high.
If the PRNDL information is missing or invalid from the TCM (Transmission Control Module), the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0101:00 and defaults the PRNDL display to off (blank).
- DTC P1706:00 (High Vehicle Speed Observed In Park)- a continuous memory DTC that sets if the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) detects a short to ground on the brake shift interlock input, pulling the circuit low with a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) input over 16 km/h (10 mph), indicating that the vehicle is in motion.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Brake shift interlock
- PCM concern
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST AE : THE PRNDL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
AE1 CHECK THE PRNDL DISPLAY PARK OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Shift the selector lever through the different gear positions while observing the PRNDL display.
- Place the selector lever in the PARK (P) position.
- Ignition OFF.
- Observe the PRNDL display.
Does the PRNDL display the different ranges according to the selector lever position then display P for approximately 5 seconds when the key is turned off?
Yes
The system is functioning correctly at this time.
No
GO to AE2.
AE2 RETRIEVE THE RECORD DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For all DTCs, CLEAR the DTCs. DRIVE the vehicle above 16 km/h (10 mph) for more than 5 seconds. REPEAT the self-test.
If DTC U0101:00 returns, GO to Pinpoint Test AW. Pinpoint Test AW: DTC U0121:00
If DTC P1706:00 returns, GO to AE4.
No
GO to AE3.
AE3 RETRIEVE AND RECORD THE DTCs FROM THE TCM (Transmission Control Module) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded TCM (Transmission Control Module) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any TCM (Transmission Control Module) DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart in Body Control Systems. Body Control Systems
No
GO to AE4.
AE4 CHECK THE PARK DETECT INPUT TO THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Brake Shift Interlock C2127.
- Install a fused jumper wire between the brake shift interlock C2127-2, circuit CET52 (GN), harness side and ground.
- Ignition ON.
- Monitor the PRNDL indicator with the jumper wire installed and with the jumper wire removed.
Does the PRNDL display P with the jumper wire installed and blank with the jumper wire removed?
Yes
INSTALL a new brake shift interlock. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to AE5.
AE5 CHECK THE BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220.
- Measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-14, circuit CET52 (GN), harness side and the brake shift interlock C2127-2, circuit CET52 (GN), harness side; and between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-14, circuit CET52 (GN), harness side and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) and the selector lever, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) and ground?
Yes
GO to AE6.
No
REPAIR the circuit. REPEAT the self-test. CLEAR the DTCs.
AE6 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION
- Disconnect all the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
