Removal and Installation
NOTE: New O-ring seals must be installed any time the pressure and return lines are disconnected from the steering gear.
1. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
3. NOTICE: Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the steering column has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.
Remove the bolt and detach the steering column shaft from the gear.
- To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) (commercial chassis).
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) (non-commercial chassis).
4. Disconnect the pressure and return line fittings from the steering gear.
- Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
- To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
5. Remove the drag link-to-sector shaft arm cotter pin, nut retainer and nut.
- Discard the cotter pin.
- To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
6. Using the Steering Arm Remover, separate the sector shaft arm from the drag link.
7. Remove the 3 steering gear bolts and the gear.
- To install, tighten to 165 Nm (122 lb-ft).
8. Secure the steering gear in a vise and remove the sector shaft arm nut and lock washer.
- To install, tighten to 275 Nm (203 lb-ft).
9. Using the Steering Arm Remover, remove the steering gear sector shaft arm.
10. NOTE: When connecting pressure and return line fittings with O-ring seals, new seals must be installed.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Install new O-ring seals on the pressure and return line fittings.
- Install a new cotter pin.
11. Fill the power steering system.
