Pinpoint Test Y: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the powertrain malfunction (wrench) status from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The PCM monitors the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system status and transmission status. When a fault condition exists in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system or in the transmission, the PCM provides the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator on.
If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transmission message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transmission message received.
If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator on. If the transmission message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0101:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator on.
NOTE: If U0100:00 is set in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) concern
- Transmission concern
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST Y : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
Y1 CHECK THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) OFF INDICATOR USING THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DEALER TEST MODE
- Ignition ON.
- Enter Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Dealer Test Mode.
- Scroll down to the telltale test (base IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)) or TELLTALE TEST (message center IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)) display.
- Monitor the powertrain malfunction (warning) indicator.
Is the powertrain malfunction (warning) indicator illuminated?
Yes
GO to Y2.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
Y2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AU. Pinpoint Test AU: DTC U0100:00
For DTC U0101:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AV. Pinpoint Test AV: DTC U0101:00
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to Y3.
Y3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs first. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
