Pinpoint Test W: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status, the transaxle status and the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) status from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). When a fault condition exists in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system, the transaxle or the AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system, the PCM provides the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) with a message to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator.

If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control), transaxle or AWD (All-Wheel Drive) message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator remains in the last indication mode (on/off) based upon the last known good message.

If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control), transaxle or AWD (All-Wheel Drive) message is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator on.

NOTE: If U0100:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system concern

- AWD (All-Wheel Drive) concern (if equipped)

- Transaxle concern

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST W : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

W1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR FUNCTION

- Close all doors, hood and liftgate.

- Ignition ON.

- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the message center to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.
Open the driver door while monitoring the door ajar message center warning indicator.

Does the driver door ajar message center warning indicator turn off with the driver door closed and turn on with the driver door open?

Yes
GO to W2.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

W2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AQ Pinpoint Test AQ: DTC U0100:00.

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes.

No
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs. REFER to Computers and Control Systems.
