Pinpoint Test X: The Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The charging system message center warning indicator is controlled by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) based upon data received from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The BCM (Body Control Module) receives the charging system status from the PCM over the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network). When a fault is detected in the charging system, the BCM (Body Control Module) sends the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) a request to illuminate the charging system message center warning indicator.
If the charging system message center warning indicator request message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the charging system indicator remains in the last indication state (on or off) based on the last know good message received. If the charging system message is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0140:00 in continuous memory and defaults the charging system warning indicator on.
NOTE: If DTC U0140:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Charging system concern
- PCM
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST X : THE CHARGING SYSTEM MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
X1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any charging system DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to X2.
X2 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION
- Check the charging system operation.
Does the charging system operate correctly?
Yes
GO to X3.
No
REFER to Charging System.
X3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Is DTC U0140:00 recorded?
Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AU Pinpoint Test AU: DTC U0140:00.
No
GO to X4.
X4 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR FUNCTION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: PCM C175B.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center indicators rotate through each of the warnings. Allow the displays to rotate through each display while determining whether the powertrain malfunction (wrench) and over-temperature message center warning indicator is active.
Observe the message center or integrated display area of the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) with the PCM connected and disconnected.
Do the powertrain malfunction (wrench) and engine over-temperature warning message center indicators remain off when the PCM is connected and become active with the PCM disconnected?
Yes
If the charging system message center warning indicator is never on, the system is operating correctly at this time.
If the charging system message center warning indicator is always on, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
