Transmission Fluid Cooler - Warmer









Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Drain the engine cooling system.

3. Remove the air cleaner.

4. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.

5. Remove the battery tray.

6. NOTE: Slide the locking tab upwards to unlock the electrical connector.
Disconnect the TCM (Transmission Control Module) electrical connector.






7. Disconnect the 3 battery cable pin-type retainers from the TCM (Transmission Control Module) bracket.





8. Remove the TCM (Transmission Control Module) bracket nut, TCM (Transmission Control Module) and bracket.





9. Remove and discard the rear transmission fluid cooler tube assembly bolt.





10. Disconnect the rear transmission fluid cooler tube assembly from the cooler bypass valve.





11. Inspect the cooler bypass valve to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the thermal cooler bypass valve. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the cooler bypass valve, remove the seals and backing rings.





12. Remove the rear transmission fluid cooler outlet and inlet tube bolts and disconnect the rear transmission fluid cooler outlet and inlet tubes from the transmission fluid cooler- warmer.





13. Inspect the transaxle case to be sure that the rear transmission fluid cooler outlet and inlet tube seals and backing rings were removed with the rear transmission fluid cooler outlet and inlet tubes and are not stuck in the transaxle case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transaxle case, remove the seals and backing rings.





14. Disconnect the 2 coolant hoses from the transmission fluid cooler- warmer.





15. Remove the 2 transmission fluid cooler- warmer bolts and the transmission fluid cooler- warmer.





Installation

1. Install the transmission fluid cooler- warmer and the 2 transmission fluid cooler- warmer bolts.
- Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).






2. Connect the 2 coolant hoses to the transmission fluid cooler- warmer.





3. Inspect the rear transmission fluid cooler tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary. Lubricate the transmission fluid cooler tube seals with clean transmission fluid and install the backing rings and seals on the rear transmission fluid cooler tube.

4. Connect the rear transmission fluid cooler outlet and inlet tubes to the transmission fluid cooler- warmer and the 2 rear transmission fluid cooler outlet and inlet tube bolts.
- Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).






5. Inspect the rear transmission fluid cooler tube assembly backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary. Lubricate the transmission fluid cooler tube assembly seals with clean transmission fluid and install the backing rings and seals on the rear transmission fluid cooler tube assembly.

6. Connect the rear transmission fluid cooler tube assembly to the cooler bypass valve.





7. Install a new rear transmission fluid cooler tube assembly bolt.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).






8. Install the TCM (Transmission Control Module), bracket and TCM (Transmission Control Module) bracket nut.
- Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).






9. Connect the 3 battery cable pin-type retainers to the TCM (Transmission Control Module) bracket.





10. Connect the TCM (Transmission Control Module) electrical connector.





11. Install the battery tray.

12. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe.

13. Install the air cleaner.

14. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

15. Fill the transmission with fluid and verify correct operation. For additional information, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems.
