Instrument Cluster and Panel Illumination

Instrument Cluster and Panel Illumination

NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

The Instrument Cluster (IC) and panel illumination system consists of both dimmable and non-dimmable (fixed) illumination sources. The IC (Instrument Cluster) and panel illumination is used to provide backlighting to the instrument panel, switches, and control components when the parking lamps are on.

For Expedition equipped with autolamps, if the exterior lamps are activated during daytime sunload conditions, the message center illumination remains at full intensity and does not dim from the instrument panel dimmer switch during this condition. If the vehicle travels under a bridge or a tunnel, the low level of ambient light causes the illumination level of the message center to change to the level set by the instrument panel dimmer switch. The message center illumination changes back to full intensity when the intense ambient light is restored.

For Navigator, if the exterior lamps are activated during daytime sunload conditions, the message center, the Audio Control Module (ACM), the HVAC module and the switch illumination remain at full intensity and do not dim from the instrument panel dimmer switch during this condition. If the vehicle travels under a bridge or a tunnel, the low level of ambient light causes the illumination level of the message center, the ACM (Audio Control Module), the HVAC module and the switch illumination to change to the level set by the instrument panel dimmer switch. The message center, the ACM (Audio Control Module), the HVAC module and the switch illumination change back to full intensity when the intense ambient light is restored.

The level of intensity is adjustable by rotating the instrument panel dimmer switch to increase or decrease intensity.

The dimmable backlighting system provides dimmable backlighting to the following components:

- Adjustable pedal switch

- Ash receptacle (Navigator only)

- ACM (Audio Control Module)

- Auxiliary climate control assembly

- HVAC module

- Clock (Navigator only)

- Door lock control switches (Navigator only)

- Floor shifter

- Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) mode select switch

- Headlamp switch

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

- Message center switch

- Overhead console switches

- Power liftgate/traction control/hazard switch

- Window control switches (Navigator only)

- Steering wheel switches

NOTE: If the battery is disconnected or discharged, or the instrument panel dimmer switch is disconnected, the instrument panel dimmer switch requires calibration. Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the lowest backlighting setting to the DOME LAMP position. This makes sure that all displays are visible under all lighting conditions.

The fixed backlighting system consists of the following component:

- Door lock control switches (Expedition only)

- Window control switches (Expedition only)
