Pinpoint Test L: The Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) status from the Restraints Control Module (RCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. If an SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) concern is detected, the RCM (Restraints Control Module) sets a DTC and sends a message to the IC (Instrument Cluster) to turn on the air bag warning indicator. If the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) status message is missing or is deemed invalid for greater than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0151 and defaults the air bag warning indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- RCM (Restraints Control Module)

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST L : THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

L1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Is DTC U0151 recorded?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AZ. Pinpoint Test AZ: DTC U0151

No
GO to L2.

L2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE RCM (Restraints Control Module) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded RCM (Restraints Control Module) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any RCM (Restraints Control Module) DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems to continue diagnosis of the restraint system.

No
GO to L3.

L3 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) air bag warning indicator (Airbag) active command on and off. Observe the air bag warning indicator.

Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
INSTALL a new RCM (Restraints Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . ACTIVATE the air bag system. REFER to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
