Removal and Installation

All vehicles

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to Battery Disconnect Removal and Replacement.

3. Remove the battery cable body ground terminal bolt and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 13 Nm (115 lb-in).


4. Disconnect the 2 battery cable harness retainers from the battery tray.

5. Disconnect the battery current sensor electrical connector.

6. Remove the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) harness positive terminal nut and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).


7. Remove the Battery Junction Box (BJB) harness positive terminal nut and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).


8. Loosen the positive battery cable terminal nut and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).


9. Disconnect the battery cable in-line electrical connector.

10. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Battery Tray .

Vehicles with 3.5L GTDI

11. Remove the LH ACL (Air Cleaner) pipe-to-turbocharger pipe and the LH turbocharger-to-Charge Air Cooler (CAC) pipe.

All vehicles

12. Remove the generator B+ cable end cover.

13. Remove the generator B+ cable end nut and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 17 Nm (150 lb-in).


14. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

15. If equipped, turn the 4 quarter-turn retainers and remove the rear splash shield.





16. Turn the 4 quarter-turn retainers, detach the 8 pushpins and remove the lower air deflector.





17. If equipped, remove the 4 bolts and the skid plate.
- To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).






18. If equipped, remove the 4 bolts and the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) skid plate.
- To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).






19. NOTE: 3.5L GTDI oil filter drip shield shown, 3.7L similar.
Remove the 3 bolts and the oil filter drip shield.

- To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).






20. Remove the battery cable harness bracket bolt from the RF frame.
- To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).


21. Remove the battery cable chassis ground terminal bolt.
- To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).


22. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

23. Disconnect the wire harness retainer from the A/C compressor.

24. Remove the battery cable shield nut.
- To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).


25. Position the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket and wire harness aside.

26. Remove the wire harness retainer from the battery cable shield.

27. Remove the starter solenoid terminal cover.

28. Remove the starter solenoid wire terminal nut and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).


29. Remove the starter solenoid positive cable terminal nut and position the cable aside.
- To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).


30. Remove the nut and position the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket aside.
- To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).






31. Remove the battery cable engine ground terminal stud bolt.
- To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).


Vehicles with Four Wheel Drive (4WD)

32. Position a suitable hydraulic jack under the front axle. Securely strap the axle to the jack.

33. Remove the 3 front axle mounting bolts.
- To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).






34. Lower the front axle to allow clearance to the 2 wire harness retainers at the engine front cover and the engine block.

All vehicles

35. Disconnect the wire harness retainers from the engine front cover, engine block and the oil filter adaptor.

36. Remove the battery cable.

37. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
