Pinpoint Test Y: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Indicator Is Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives requests from the PCM and Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) to control the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator. The PCM provides an indicator request for Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) faults and transmission faults over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) provides an indicator request for Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) faults over the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network).
If the indicator request message for ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transmission faults is missing or if the data is deemed invalid for less than 5 seconds, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator remains in the last state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the indicator request message for ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transmission faults is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator active (on).
If the indicator request message for the 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) faults is missing or deemed invalid for less than 5 seconds, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator remains in the last state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the indicator request message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0102:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator active (on).
NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge. If DTC U0102:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative 4X4 high or 4X4 low indicator when equipped with Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Message center concern
- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) concern
- 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) concern (if equipped)
- Transmission concern
PINPOINT TEST Y : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER INDICATOR IS ALWAYS ON
Y1 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR
- Close all doors then open the LH front door.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the displays to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.
Observe the message center.
Is the door ajar message center warning indicator active?
Yes
GO to Y2.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Test AF: The Message Center Is Not Operating Correctly
Y2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Is DTC U0100:00 or DTC U0102:00 recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Test AT: DTC U0100:00
For DTC U0102:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AU. Pinpoint Test AU: DTC U0102:00
No
GO to Y3.
Y3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REFER to Transfer Case to diagnose TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) DTCs.
