Pinpoint Test S: The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning indicator request from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). If the BCM (Body Control Module) determines the tire pressure has exceeded the low tire pressure limits, a request is sent to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) to illuminate the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator. If a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) fault condition exists, the BCM (Body Control Module) sends a request to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) to flash the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator.

If the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) status message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0140:00 and flashes the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) indicator for approximately 75 seconds then turns the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) indicator on.

NOTE: If DTC U0140:00 sets in the BCM (Body Control Module), other symptoms may also be present such as high beam indicator, RH/LH turn indicators, instrument panel backlighting, and door ajar indication inoperative.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Tire pressure

- TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) concern

- BCM (Body Control Module)

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST S : THE TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

S1 CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE

- Verify the tire pressure in all tires meets the recommended tire pressures on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label. Refer to Vehicle Identification Codes. Application and ID

Do all the tires meet the recommended tire pressures?

Yes
GO to S2.
No
CORRECT the tire pressures. TEST the system for normal operation.

S2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTC from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0140:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AY. Pinpoint Test AY: DTC U0140:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to S3.

S3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE BCM (Body Control Module) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded BCM (Body Control Module) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to the Body Control Module (BCM) DTC Chart in Body Control Systems.
No
GO to S4.

S4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) MODULE SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) module DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Wheels and Tires.
No
GO to S5.

S5 CARRY OUT THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator (TPMWARN_LMP) active command. Command the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator on and off. Observe the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator.

Does the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
If the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator is never on after the bulb prove-out, the system is operating correctly at this time.

If the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator is always on, INSTALL a new BCM (Body Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
