Pinpoint Test K: All Climate Controlled Seats Are Inoperative
Normal Operation
The Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) is supplied voltage at all times but the climate controlled seat system only operates with the engine running. The system can be operated with the ignition ON by using a scan tool to bypass the climate controlled seat switches on the HVAC module. When commanding a heat or cool mode operation in this manner only operates in 15-second intervals. Both voltage supply circuits are spliced together internal to the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module), so if one circuit becomes open, both seats can still be operated. However, if a fault occurs setting a DTC specific to either climate controlled seat, only the affected seat is disabled by the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) and the other seat remains operational.
The DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) receives all control commands over the Controller Area Network (CAN) communication circuits from the HVAC module which contains the climate controlled seat switches. The climate controlled seat system can only operate if both the HVAC module and DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) are communicating correctly on the CAN (Controller Area Network) circuits.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) fault
- HVAC module
- DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)
PINPOINT TEST K : ALL CLIMATE CONTROLLED SEATS ARE INOPERATIVE
K1 CHECK FOR DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) AND HVAC MODULE DTCs
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test- DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test- HVAC Module.
Are any DTCs retrieved?
Yes
For DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) DTCs, GO to the Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) DTC Chart. Seats
For HVAC module DTCs, REFER to Heating and Air Conditioning to diagnose the HVAC module fault.
No
If either the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) or HVAC module is not communicating, REFER to Information Bus to diagnose the no communication concern.
If module communication is OK, CHECK the climate control system operation and REFER to Heating and Air Conditioning to diagnose any concerns found. Otherwise, GO to K2.
K2 CHECK FOR CORRECT DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) OPERATION
NOTE: If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side air bag is being serviced, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be depowered. Refer to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate an SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) fault.
NOTE: The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
- Ignition OFF.
- WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, carry out the following:
- Depower the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in the General Procedures portion of Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.
- Disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module C339.
- Connect the battery ground cable.
- Disconnect all the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) electrical connectors.
- Check the harness and component side connectors for the following:
- corrosion.
- damaged pins.
- pushed-out pins.
- Connect all the DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) electrical connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Start the engine.
- Operate the climate controlled seats and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module). REFER to Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) . CLEAR all CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes). REPEAT the self-test.
For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C339. REPOWER the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). REFER to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR all CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes). REPEAT the self-test.
For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C339. REPOWER the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). REFER to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.
