Removal and Installation
WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.
WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNING: Always install new brake shoes or pads at both ends of an axle to reduce the possibility of brakes pulling vehicle to one side. Failure to follow this instruction may result in uneven braking and serious personal injury.
NOTICE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted or plastic surfaces or damage to the surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.
All vehicles
1. If necessary, remove the brake fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.
2. Remove the wheel and tire.
3. If equipped, remove the 2 brake tube shield nuts and the brake tube shield.
- To install, tighten the nuts to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
F-450 vehicles
4. Remove the upper caliper anchor plate bolt and loosen the lower caliper anchor plate bolt. Pivot the brake caliper and anchor plate to gain access to the upper brake caliper bolt.
- To install, tighten to 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) using a butterfly socket torque adaptor (such as Snap On(R) stock #SBS30).
All vehicles
5. NOTICE: Do not pry in caliper sight hole to retract pistons as this can damage the pistons and boots.
NOTICE: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.
Remove the 2 brake caliper bolts and position the caliper aside.
- Support the caliper using mechanic's wire.
- For F-250/350 Single Rear Wheel (SRW), tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
- For F-350 Dual Rear Wheels (DRW), tighten to 76 Nm (56 lb-ft).
- For F-450/550, tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb-ft).
6. Remove the 2 brake pads and inspect for wear or contamination. Remove the 4 retraction clips.
- Discard the retraction clips.
- Inspect the disc brake caliper for leaks.
7. Measure the brake disc thickness.
- Install a new brake disc if not within specification.
8. Inspect the disc brake anchor plate assembly.
- Check the guide pin boots for damage.
- Check the guide pins for binding and damage.
- Install new pins if worn or damaged. Lubricate the pins with silicone brake caliper grease.
9. NOTICE: Protect the piston and boots when pushing the caliper piston into the caliper bore or damage to the piston and/or boots may occur.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Install new retraction clips.
- If installing new brake pads, using a suitable tool and a worn brake pad, compress the disc brake caliper pistons into the caliper.
