NOTICE: Do not tighten center bearing support bolts until the driveshaft is fully positioned on the vehicle and the center bearing support is correctly aligned or bearing failure and/or NVH issues may occur.
NOTICE: Always install new driveshaft yoke/flange bolts, U-joint bearing straps and U-joint bearing strap bolts or incorrect clamp load and/or component damage may occur.
NOTICE: To prevent damage when servicing the driveshaft, support the driveshaft using mechanic's wire.
NOTICE: If the driveshaft is equipped with a transmission or transfer case slip yoke, lubricate the slip-yoke spline with the specified grease prior to installation. When installing the driveshaft, do not insert the corroded/rusted portion of the slip yoke barrel into the transmission or transfer case seal or damage to the seal may occur.
NOTE: For reference during installation, index-mark all driveshafts prior to removal.
NOTE: Wrap electrical tape around U-joint bearing caps to prevent them from falling off the U-joint spider.
NOTE: Driveshaft yokes fit tightly on the axle pinion flange pilot. Using a suitable tool, pry only in the slot on each side of the driveshaft yoke to disconnect the yoke from the flange. It may be necessary to tap the driveshaft yoke with a plastic or rubber soft-faced hammer if a pry area is not present on the driveshaft yoke. To make sure that the yoke seats squarely on the flange during installation, tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern.
1. NOTE: Driveshafts differ in length, diameter, material, number of pieces and the type of slip yokes to accommodate various wheel base and powertrain combinations.
Refer to exploded views and any Warnings, Notices, Notes, Materials, Specifications and Special Tools. Items in the exploded views may not be listed in order of removal.
2. Clean grease deposits, dirt and rust from the following:
- The driveshaft yoke/flange mating surfaces.
- All driveshaft slip yoke areas.
3. Inspect the following:
- The U-joint slip yoke boot for rips or holes. Install a new boot if necessary.
- The driveshaft center bearing support for wear or rough action. If roughness or wear is evident, install a new driveshaft center bearing support.
- The U-joints for freedom of movement, missing snap rings, damage or wear. Install new U-joints as necessary.
