Pinpoint Test A: The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives a hot at all times voltage from the Body Control Module (BCM) fuse 11 (10A). The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) uses a RUN/START input messaged from the BCM (Body Control Module) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Communication concern
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST A : THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) IS INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
A1 CHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) HOT AT ALL TIMES VOLTAGE SUPPLY
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220.
- Measure the voltage between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-6, circuit SBP11 (BU/RD or YE/RD), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to A2.
No
VERIFY the BCM (Body Control Module) fuse 11 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit SBP11 (BU/RD or YE/RD) for an open. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation. [1][2]Diagrams By Number
A2 CHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the voltage between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-6, circuit SBP11 (BU/RD or YE/RD), harness side and the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-22, circuit GD184 (BK/GY or BK/YE), harness side.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to A3.
No
REPAIR circuit GD184 (BK/GY or BK/YE) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
A3 VERIFY THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) PASSES THE NETWORK TEST
- Connect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220.
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- In the LH pane of the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) network test display screen, verify whether the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) passed the network test.
Did the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) pass the network test?
Yes
GO to A4.
No
To diagnose the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) does not respond to the scan tool, REFER to Information Bus.
A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION
- Disconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
