Pinpoint Test AG: The Wait To Start Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The wait to start data is transmitted to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus from the PCM. The wait to start indicator illuminates when the key is in the ON position with the engine off (KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) ) indicating that the combustion chamber is preheating.
If the wait to start data is missing for less than 5 seconds, the wait to start indicator remains in the last indication state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the wait to start data is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 in continuous memory and defaults the wait to start indicator off.
NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST AG : THE WAIT TO START INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
AG1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC P0381:01, INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BA. Pinpoint Test BA: DTC U0100:00
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to AG2.
AG2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to AG3.
AG3 CARRY OUT THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) WARNING LAMPS COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.
- Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) wait to start indicator (GLOW_PLUG) active command. Command the wait to start indicator on and off. Observe the wait to start indicator.
Does the wait to start indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
