Pinpoint Test V: The Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning indicator request from the Restraints Control Module (RCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. If an SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) concern is detected, the RCM (Restraints Control Module) sets a DTC and sends a request to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) to turn on the air bag warning indicator.

If the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) status message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the air bag warning indicator to its last state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) status message is missing or is deemed invalid for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0151:00 in continuous memory and defaults the air bag warning indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) concern

- RCM (Restraints Control Module)

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST V : THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

V1 CARRY OUT THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) RESTRAINTS OUTPUT CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) air bag warning indicator (AIRBAG_LMP) active command. Command the air bag warning indicator on and off. Observe the air bag warning indicator.

Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
GO to V2.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

V2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE RCM (Restraints Control Module) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded RCM (Restraints Control Module) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.

No
GO to V3.

V3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0151:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BG. Pinpoint Test BG: DTC U0151:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
If the air bag warning indicator is never on, the system is operating correctly at this time.

If the air bag warning indicator is always on, INSTALL a new RCM (Restraints Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
