Pinpoint Test V: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
Normal Operation
The High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable circuits HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) and HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- ABS module
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- PCM
- Restraints Control Module (RCM)
- Auxiliary Heater Control Module (AHCM) (diesel engine only, if equipped)
- Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module (if equipped)
- Transmission Control Module (TCM) (diesel engine only, if equipped)
- Body Control Module (BCM)
- Parking Aid Module (PAM) (if equipped)
- Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) (if equipped)
PINPOINT TEST V : NO HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Inspection and Verification
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.
V1 CHECK THE DLC (Data Link Connector) PINS FOR DAMAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Inspect DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 6 and 14 for damage.
Are DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 6 and 14 OK?
Yes
GO to V2.
No
REPAIR the DLC (Data Link Connector) as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
V2 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?
Yes
GO to V3.
No
GO to V5.
V3 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V4.
No
GO to V24.
V4 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 6 volts?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) has tested within specifications. GO to Pinpoint Test U to test for an intermittent network fault condition. Pinpoint Test U: Intermittent No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, One Or More Modules Are Not Respond
V5 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
Yes
GO to V6.
No
GO to V9.
V6 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR WITH THE PCM DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: PCM C175B (Gasoline Engine) or C1232B (Diesel Engine).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
Yes
GO to V7.
No
GO to V8.
V7 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE PCM AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
- For gasoline engines, measure the resistance between the PCM C175B-59, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side.
- For gasoline engines, measure the resistance between the PCM C175B-58, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
- For diesel engines, measure the resistance between the PCM C1232B-59, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side.
- For diesel engines, measure the resistance between the PCM C1232B-43, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V37.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
V8 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE BCM (Body Control Module) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F.
- Measure the resistance between the BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F-16, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F-17, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V43.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
V9 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V11.
No
GO to V10.
V10 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN AT THE DLC (Data Link Connector)
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
REPAIR the DLC (Data Link Connector) or REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
A capacitor internal to a module may still be draining causing irregular resistance readings. WAIT 5 minutes. REPEAT the pinpoint test.
V11 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE PCM DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: PCM C175B (Gasoline Engine) or C1232B (Diesel Engine).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module), GO to V12.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module), GO to V13.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V37.
V12 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: PAM (Parking Aid Module) C2023.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V13.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V38.
V13 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ABS MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a TBC (Trailer Brake Control) module, GO to V14.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a TBC (Trailer Brake Control) module, GO to V15.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V39.
V14 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE TBC (Trailer Brake Control) MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: TBC (Trailer Brake Control) Module C2142.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V15.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V40.
V15 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RCM (Restraints Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: RCM (Restraints Control Module) C310B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module), GO to V16.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module), GO to V17.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V41.
V16 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) C2298.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V17.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V42.
V17 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V18.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V44.
V18 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) C2414A.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module), GO to V19.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module), GO to V20.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V47.
V19 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) C2371A.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V20.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V48.
V20 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE BCM (Body Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280F.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine, GO to V21.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a diesel engine, REPAIR the circuits. CONNECT all modules. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V43.
V21 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE TCM (Transmission Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: TCM (Transmission Control Module) C1750.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to V22.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V45.
V22 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - AHCM (Auxiliary Heater Control Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Auxiliary Heater Control Module (AHCM).
Is the vehicle equipped with an AHCM (Auxiliary Heater Control Module) ?
Yes
GO to V23.
No
REPAIR the circuits. CONNECT all modules. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
V23 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE AHCM (Auxiliary Heater Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: AHCM (Auxiliary Heater Control Module) C2463B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
REPAIR the circuits. CONNECT all modules. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V46.
V24 CHECK THE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE PCM DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: PCM C175B (Gasoline Engine) or C1232B (Diesel Engine).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 5,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to V37.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module), GO to V25.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module), GO to V26.
