Normal Operation
The Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors all Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) device connections. If the RCM (Restraints Control Module) detects a connection or device connected that is not stored in memory or is not configured for the component, the RCM (Restraints Control Module) sets a DTC and sends a message to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to illuminate air bag warning indicator.
When a new RCM (Restraints Control Module) is installed, it must be configured. Configuration tells the RCM (Restraints Control Module) which SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) components the vehicle should be equipped with. A vehicle may be equipped with the wiring for a specific SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) component, but not equipped with the actual component. If the RCM (Restraints Control Module) is configured for certain SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) components not to be present, but detects that those circuits are in use, "incorrect component installed" DTCs may be set. An example of this would be installation of aftermarket accessories on the unused Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) switch circuits in a Crew Cab vehicle.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Incorrectly installed accessories
- Incorrect ABS module
- Incorrect RCM (Restraints Control Module)
- RCM (Restraints Control Module) not configured
