Differential Case and Ring Gear - Two-Piece, Conventional
Disassembly
1. Remove the differential carrier. For additional information, refer to Differential Carrier .
2. Remove and discard the 12 ring gear bolts.
3. Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive off the ring gear.
4. Position the Differential Clutch Preload Gauge in a vise.
5. Position the differential case on the Differential Clutch Preload Gauge.
6. Index-mark the differential case halves.
7. NOTE: Attach the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture with a bolt and nut.
Install the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture on the differential case as shown and loosen the 9 differential case bolts.
8. Remove the 9 differential case bolts.
9. Remove the right differential case half and differential side gear.
10. Remove the differential pinion shaft and differential pinion gears.
11. Remove the left differential side gear and the differential side gear thrust washers.
Assembly
1. Position left differential case half (ring gear side) on the Differential Clutch Preload Gauge.
2. Lubricate the differential side gears and the differential side gear thrust washers with long-life grease.
3. Lubricate the differential pinion gears, pinion gear thrust washers and the differential pinion shaft with long-life grease.
4. Install the left differential side gear and thrust washer.
5. Install the differential pinion shaft and the differential pinion gears.
6. Position the right differential case half with the right side gear and thrust washer.
7. With the index marks aligned, apply threadlock to the 9 differential case retaining bolts.
8. NOTE: Use the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture as shown to keep the differential case from turning.
Install the 9 differential case retaining bolts.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) and then tighten an additional 90 degrees.
9. Install the 12 new ring gear bolts.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) and then tighten an additional 60 degrees.
10. Install the differential carrier. For additional information, refer to Differential Carrier .
