Disassembly

Driver Seat Backrest With Power Recline

Driver Seat Backrest Without Power Recline

NOTE: Refer to Seat Backrest - Front, Without Fold Flat for recliner-to-seat track bolt tightening sequence and torque specification.









WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.

WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat back pad, trim cover and side air bag module and nuts must be installed. The seat back frame should be replaced if necessary.

1. Remove the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest- Front, Without Fold Flat .

2. If not equipped with a DVD player, remove the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .

3. Separate the backrest trim cover lower J-clips and invert the backrest trim cover up to the first row of hog rings.

4. Remove the 3 first row hog rings.





5. Invert the backrest cover up to the second row of hog rings.

6. If equipped with a DVD player, remove the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .

7. Remove the 3 second row hog rings.





8. From the rear of the backrest, separate the backrest trim cover J-clip attached to the backrest frame wire.





9. Squeeze the ends of the deployment chute clips together and open the deployment chute.





10. Invert the backrest trim cover up and pull the deployment chute through the backrest foam pad.

11. Remove the backrest trim cover.

12. If equipped, disconnect the backrest heated seat mat electrical connector and separate the connector pin-type retainer from the backrest frame.





13. Remove the backrest frame assembly from the backrest foam pad.

14. Separate the side air bag module wire harness retainers from the backrest frame.





15. Remove the nuts and the side air bag module with wire harness.

16. If equipped, remove the power lumbar assembly.
1. Disconnect the power lumbar motor electrical connector.

2. Squeeze the power lumbar retaining clip together and separate it from the backrest frame.
- Repeat for the power lumbar retaining clip on the other side.

3. Remove the power lumbar assembly.






17. If equipped, remove the manual lumbar.
1. Separate the manual lumbar cable pin-type retainer.

2. Squeeze the manual lumbar retaining clips together, on each side and separate them from the backrest frame.

3. Remove the manual lumbar.






18. If equipped, remove the clip on the recliner shaft and the recline motor bolt.





19. If equipped, release the 2 clips (1 shown) and slide the sleeve back on the recliner shaft.





20. If equipped, remove the power recline motor.
1. Slide the recliner shaft assembly out of the recliner and remove the short recliner shaft.

2. Remove the sleeve from the long recliner shaft.

3. Slide the long recliner shaft out of the recline motor.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the power recline motor.
- If necessary, remove the long recliner shaft from the recliner.






21. If equipped, remove the backrest and DVD player wire harness from the backrest frame.
- Note wire harness routing for installation.


Assembly

1. If equipped, route the backrest and DVD player wire harness and install the retainers.





2. If equipped, install the recline motor in the following sequence.
1. Connect the recline motor electrical connector.

2. Slide the long recliner shaft into the recliner and recline motor.

3. Slide the sleeve and short recliner shaft onto the long recliner shaft.

4. Slide the recliner shaft assembly into the recliner on the other side.

5. Position the recline motor and install the bolt.
- Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).

6. Install the clip on the recliner shaft recession, near the recline motor.


3. If equipped, install the manual lumbar in the following sequence.
1. Squeeze the manual lumbar retaining clips together, on each side and engage them into the backrest frame.

2. Route the manual lumbar cable and install the pin-type retainer.


4. If equipped, install the power lumbar in the following sequence.
1. Squeeze the power lumbar retaining clip together and engage it into the backrest frame.
- Repeat for the power lumbar retaining clip on the other side.

2. Connect the power lumbar motor electrical connector.


5. WARNING: Before installing the seat side air bag module/deployment chute assembly:
- Inspect the side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material.
- Remove any foreign material from the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute, the seat backrest frame mounting bracket and the air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad.
- Install new parts if damaged.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.


NOTE: The side air bag modules are keyed left and right. If the side air bag module locator pin does not align to the backrest frame hole, the wrong side air bag module is being installed.

Position the 2 side air bag module studs and locator pin through the backrest frame and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).






6. Route and attach the side air bag module wire harness to the backrest frame.





7. WARNING: Inspect the seat side air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad for any foreign material. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

Position the backrest frame assembly into the backrest foam pad.


8. If equipped, connect the backrest heated seat mat and attach the connector pin-type retainer to the backrest frame.





9. WARNING: Check the seat side air bag deployment chute for damage. The deployment chute must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute, a new seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

With the backrest trim cover inside out, position the backrest trim cover to the backrest foam pad and frame assembly.
- Align the head restraint holes in the backrest trim cover to the holes in the backrest foam pad and frame.


10. Roll the backrest trim cover down and position both ends of the deployment chute through the backrest foam pad opening.





11. Position the deployment chute around the side air bag module.
1. Insert the outboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the backrest frame.

2. Insert the inboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the backrest frame, pulling it around the inboard side of the backrest frame.






12. Engage the side air bag deployment chute retaining clips and snap them together.
- The side air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the backrest frame.

- Align the side air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it is centered around the side air bag module.






13. From the rear of the backrest, attach the backrest trim cover J-clip to the backrest frame wire.

14. Roll the backrest trim cover down and install the 3 second row hog rings.





15. If equipped with a DVD player, install the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .

16. Install the 3 first row hog rings.





17. Roll the backrest trim cover all the way down and engage the lower J-clips.
- If equipped, make sure the manual lumbar cable and side air bag module wire harness are routed out from the outboard side of the backrest before engaging the lower J-clips.

- If equipped, make sure the backrest feed wire harness is routed out from the inboard side of the backrest before engaging the lower J-clips.


18. If not equipped with a DVD player, install the 2 head restraint guides sleeves. For additional information, refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .

19. Install the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest- Front, Without Fold Flat .
