Pinpoint Test W: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status and the transaxle status and from the 4X4 control module for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) (if equipped) status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system or in the transaxle, the PCM provides the IC (Instrument Cluster) with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. When an AWD (All-Wheel Drive) fault condition exists, the 4X4 control module sends the IC (Instrument Cluster) a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transmission message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0100 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
If the AWD (All-Wheel Drive) status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0102 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
NOTE: If U0100 is set in the IC (Instrument Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) concern
- AWD (All-Wheel Drive) concern
- Transmission concern
- PCM
- IC (Instrument Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST W : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
W1 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.
- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator (WR_LMP) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on and off while observing the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to W2.
No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
W2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, GO to Pinpoint Test AO. Pinpoint Test AO: DTC U0100
For DTC U0102, GO to Pinpoint Test AP. Pinpoint Test AP: DTC U0102
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to W3.
W3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs first. REFER to the Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
If equipped with 4x4, GO to W4.
If not equipped with 4x4, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
W4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded 4X4 control module DTCs from the self-tests.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
DIAGNOSE all 4X4 control module DTCs first. REFER to Transfer Case.
No
INSTALL a new 4X4 control module. TEST the system for normal operation.
