Communications Network

Pinpoint Test X: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Set 14, Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information. Electrical Diagrams

Normal Operation

The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Audio Front Control Module (ACM)

- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM)

- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module

- Driver Seat Module (DSM)

- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)

- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)

- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM)

- HVAC module

- Instrument Cluster (IC)

- Liftgate/Trunk Module (LTM)

- Rear Entertainment Module (RETM)

- Smart Junction Box (SJB)

PINPOINT TEST X : NO MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Inspection and Verification

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.

X1 CHECK THE DLC (Data Link Connector) PINS FOR DAMAGE

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the Data Link Connector (DLC).

- Inspect DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 3 and 11 for damage.





Are DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 3 and 11 OK?

Yes
GO to X2.

No
REPAIR the DLC (Data Link Connector) as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

X2 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTANCE

- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?

Yes
GO to X3.

No
GO to X5.

X3 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
GO to X4.

No
GO to X25.

X4 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Connect: Negative Battery Cable.

- Ignition ON.

- Measure the voltage between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Is the voltage greater than 6 volts?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

No
The Controller Area Network (CAN) has tested within specifications. GO to Pinpoint Test W to diagnose the intermittent MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) fault. Pinpoint Test W: Intermittent No (MS-CAN) Communication, Communication Can Be Intermittently Established

X5 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?

Yes
GO to X6.

No
GO to X9.

X6 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?

Yes
GO to X7.

No
GO to X8.

X7 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN

- Measure the resistance between the SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B-37, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.





- Measure the resistance between the SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B-38, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X39.

No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

X8 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE IC (Instrument Cluster) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN

- Disconnect: IC (Instrument Cluster) C220.

- Measure the resistance between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-12, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.





- Measure the resistance between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-13, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X47.

No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

X9 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X11.

No
GO to X10.

X10 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes
The CAN (Controller Area Network) has tested within specifications. CONNECT the negative battery cable. VERIFY the scan tool operation on a substitute vehicle. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test on the suspect vehicle.

No
A capacitor internal to a module may still be draining, causing irregular resistance readings. WAIT 5 minutes. REPEAT the pinpoint test.

X11 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), GO to X12.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a GPSM (Global Positioning System Module), GO to X13.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X39.

X12 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) C2300.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X13.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X40.

X13 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ACM (Audio Front Control Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: ACM (Audio Front Control Module) C240C.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) module, GO to X14.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) module, GO to X15.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X41.

X14 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE AUDIO DSP (Digital Signal Processing) MODULE DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Module C4208A.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X15.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X42.

X15 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) C2402.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Front Display Interface Module (FDIM), GO to X16.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an FDIM (Front Display Interface Module), GO to X17.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X43.

X16 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) C2123.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X17.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X44.

X17 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE HVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an RETM (Rear Entertainment Module), GO to X18.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an RETM (Rear Entertainment Module), GO to X19.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X45.

X18 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: RETM (Rear Entertainment Module) C2949B.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X19.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X46.

X19 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE IC (Instrument Cluster) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: IC (Instrument Cluster) C220.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module), GO to X20.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module), GO to X21.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X47.

X20 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) C4174A.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X21.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X48.

X21 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM (Driver Seat Module)

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a DSM (Driver Seat Module).

Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM (Driver Seat Module)?

Yes
GO to X22.

No
GO to X23.

X22 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: DSM (Driver Seat Module) C341D.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to X23.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X49.

X23 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module).

Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)?

Yes
GO to X24.

No
REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

X24 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) C3342.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X50.

X25 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to X39.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), GO to X26.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a GPSM (Global Positioning System Module), GO to X27.
