Stability Control Sensor Signal Failure DTCs
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 42 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The RCM (Restraints Control Module) measures vehicle yaw rate, lateral acceleration and longitudinal acceleration and sends the information to the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module over a private HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network). This private HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) is used only for communication between the RCM (Restraints Control Module) and the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module. The yaw rate sensor, lateral and longitudinal accelerometers are contained in the RCM (Restraints Control Module). A failure of the private HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network), RCM (Restraints Control Module) or the internal sensors will cause the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) to set one or more DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
Pinpoint Test
1. CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK
1. Ignition ON.
2. NOTE: The network test does not test the private HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) between the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module and RCM (Restraints Control Module).
Using the scan tool, carry out the network test.
Does the RCM (Restraints Control Module) pass the network test?
2. CHECK THE ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) MODULE CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
1. Using a scan tool, carry out the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module self-test.
2. Retrieve and record all ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
3. Clear the DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
4. Ignition OFF.
5. Ignition ON.
6. Repeat the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0151:00 retrieved again?
3. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) MODULE SELF-TEST
1. Check the recorded DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) from the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U3003:16 or U3003:17 recorded in the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module?
4. RETRIEVE ANY DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE RCM (Restraints Control Module)
1. Using a scan tool, carry out the RCM (Restraints Control Module) self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U3003:16 or U3003:17 recorded in the RCM (Restraints Control Module)?
5. CHECK FOR DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0151:00 SET IN OTHER MODULES
1. Using the scan tool, carry out the self-test for all modules.
2. Retrieve and record the CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes) from all modules.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0151:00 recorded in any other module?
6. VERIFY THE RCM (Restraints Control Module) PART NUMBER
1. Using a scan tool, retrieve and record the RCM (Restraints Control Module) part number from the log viewer.
2. Check the part number recorded against the number listed in the Ford Catalog Advantage(TM) or equivalent.
Does the part number on the RCM (Restraints Control Module) match the part number listed in the Ford Catalog Advantage(TM) or equivalent?
7. CHECK THE ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) MODULE IVD INITIALIZATION
1. NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground and at a complete standstill. Any vehicle movement results in initialization failure.
Using a scan tool, carry out the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module IVD Initialization.
Does the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module IVD Initialization complete successfully?
8. CHECK THE ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) MODULE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Ignition ON.
3. Using a scan tool, carry out the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module self-test.
Are any stability control sensor DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), including no communication, invalid data and bus off DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) present?
9. CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
1. Depower the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). REFER to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering - without Intelligent Access (IA) or REFER to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering - with Intelligent Access (IA) .
2. Disconnect both RCM (Restraints Control Module) electrical connectors.
3. Disconnect ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) module electrical connector.
4. Ignition ON.
5. Measure:
Is any voltage present?
10. CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Measure:
Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
11. CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
1. Measure:
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
12. CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
1. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
13. CHECK FOR CORRECT RCM (Restraints Control Module) OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the RCM (Restraints Control Module) electrical connectors.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminal - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
4. Connect the RCM (Restraints Control Module) electrical connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
