The PRNDL Indicator Is Never On or Never Displays P

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to PRNDL Indicator .

If the transmission mode display actual input or transmission gear display actual message is missing from the BCM (Body Control Module) for less than the programmed length of time, the PRNDL display remains in the last indication mode.

If the BCM (Body Control Module) does not receive the transmission mode display actual input or transmission gear display actual message is missing from the TCM (Transmission Control Module) for longer than the programmed length of time, the BCM (Body Control Module) and the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0101:00.

If the transmission mode display actual input or transmission gear display actual message is missing from the BCM (Body Control Module), the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the PRNDL display to blank.

IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Pinpoint Test

1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE TCM (Transmission Control Module) SELF-TEST

1. Ignition ON.

2. Using a scan tool, perform the TCM (Transmission Control Module) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

2. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE BCM (Body Control Module) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM (Body Control Module) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

3. RETRIEVE THE RECORD DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0140:00 recorded?

4. CHECK THE PARK DETECT INPUT TO THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: Selector Lever.

3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

4. Ignition ON.

5. Monitor the PRNDL indicator with the jumper wire installed and with the jumper wire removed.

Does the PRNDL display P with the jumper wire removed and blank with the jumper wire connected?

5. CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).

3. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

6. CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

7. CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
