Principles of Operations

Power Door Locks

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) monitors the lock/unlock position of the door latches. When the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) receives an unlock/lock command from either front door lock lever, the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) energizes a relay (internal to the GEM (Generic Electronic Module)) to supply the correct power and grounds for the front and sliding door lock actuators. The power door locks function independently of ignition status or vehicle speed.

Rear Cargo Door Lock/Unlock

The rear cargo doors lock upon any lock request from the door lock cylinder, lock lever, or Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter command. The rear cargo doors only unlock when requested by pressing the rear cargo door unlock button on an RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter, using a key in the cargo door lock cylinder, or from the lock lever on the cargo door latch. The rear cargo doors unlock when the front doors are unlocked only when the stepped unlock is disabled. Refer to Stepped Unlock Programming for programming information.

When the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) receives a signal from an RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter to unlock the rear cargo doors, the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) energizes the rear cargo door lock relay which supplies voltage to the rear cargo door latch.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)

The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) receives input from programmed RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitters. The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) requests the illuminated entry feature to turn the interior lamps on when an unlock command is received. If a lock command is received, the illuminated entry feature turns off. The RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter supplies a signal to the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) when any button is pressed. The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) then supplies voltage to the appropriate door lock actuator(s) to lock or unlock the doors. The RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter can also be used to unlock just the rear cargo doors.
