Pinpoint Test P: The Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the traction control data from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The traction control indicator turns on steady if the traction control system has been disabled and a fault condition exists in the system. The IC (Instrument Cluster) monitors the traction control message from the ABS module and either flashes the traction control indicator or turns it on steady depending on the condition.
If the traction control message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the traction control indicator remains in the last indication mode (on or off), based upon the last known good data message. If the traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0121 in continuous memory and defaults the traction control indicator on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Traction control concern
- ABS module
- IC (Instrument Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST P : THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
P1 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.
- Enter the IC (Instrument Cluster) active command mode and select the traction control indicator (STAB_IND) active command. Command the traction control active indicator on and off. Observe the traction control indicator.
Does the traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to P2.
No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
P2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0121, GO to Pinpoint Test AK. Pinpoint Test AK: DTC U0121
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators
No
GO to P3.
P3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded ABS module DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.
No
INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.
