Countershaft

DISASSEMBLE

NOTE: As of 1980, a change was incorporated into the Muncie 4-speed transmission. This change consists of elimination of 1 spacer and 2 snap rings and includes a part called spacerclutch countergear, part No. 14020811. The new spacer may also be used on earlier transmissions and should reduce possibility of 3rd speed countergear becoming loose and overrunning retaining ring.


1. Remove front countergear snap ring and thrust washer. Discard snap ring.





2. Install Tool J-22832 on countershaft, open side to damper. Support
assembly in arbor press and press countershaft out of clutch countergear assembly.

3. Remove clutch countergear rear retaining ring. Discard snap ring.

4. Remove 3rd speed countergear snap ring. Discard snap ring.

5. Position assembly on an arbor press and press shaft from 3rd speed countergear.


ASSEMBLE
1. Position 3rd speed countergear and shaft in arbor press and press gear onto shaft.

NOTE: Install gear with marked surface toward front of shaft.

2. Install new 3rd speed countergear





3. snap ring. Install new clutch countergear rear snap ring as follows: Install Tool J22830, on end of shaft and position snap ring on tool. Using Tool J-22873, push down on snap ring until it engages groove on shaft. Using snap ring pliers, carefully expand ring until it just slides onto splines, then push ring down on shaft until it engages groove on shaft.





4. Position clutch countergear on shaft and press countergear onto shaft against snap ring.

5. Install clutch countergear thrust washer and front snap ring.
